We mostly need hardware decoders for free formats like OGG Theora or Dirac, not h264.
Viva la Linux, viva la Stallman, viva la Revoluzion ! --- And telling seriously, theres no linux/Xserver standard for hardware video decoding, excluding old(becoming deprecated) XvMC which can be used only for mpeg2. But Xorg developers are creating vaapi (http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/vaapi), which will replace XvMC, and will allow hw decoding of other formats. Its added to OSS Intel drivers, so if you need to build Linux Media Center buy sth with intel card integrated instead of nvidia. |

![]() h.264 pure video support would be very cool. But any else codec would be nice too(mpeg2, xvid@1080p, mov@1080p, ...). I hope that dreaming is allowed here ![]() |

9... this type of work belongs in the gpu... especially for laptops of which will allow more power savings.

I think the issue (and the question) is not whether we all want this. It is quite clear that many users would want to have this.
The question is if it is going to be supported under Linux, and when. |
