Default Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS kills ubuntu

I recently installed ubunut 7.10 and the first time it asked for driver Nvidia auto update, so let it do it...BAM killed ubuntu

Tried again last week, to get latest driver, and BAM kill ubuntu so bad I had to reinstall. I had bought this card only because it listed linux as supported...

Is there any hope of using full potential of this card? any way to get them to work with out killing the system?

It seems to be working on in basic mode

Thanks!
Corisa
