The respective install bases for either need to increase greatly for anything to occur. I think UT3 was AGEIA's one real chance, but we see how that ended up.

Second, back in 2006 I said onboard memory for a sound card was premature.

2 years later, has any game actually used much of the ram on those cards? I mean, more than the 2 or 4MB the cheapest card has? I saw thpse fatility cards with 64mb and chuckled everytime I saw them, talk about an overpriced pointless upgrade, e-penis for teh win.
Vista owners needed better drivers WAY more than XP owners, they had been maturing winxp X-Fi drivers for years when Vista came. So I think it's fair, it's not like they are any major problems on XP like there still can be for some on vista

It's also up to the gamedevelopers to utilize those soundcard RAM, I can't how it should be creative's fault entirely.

I havent been much of a creative fan, I had a SB Live! back in the days, then stuck with integrated for years.
But Ive been really happy with my X-Fi, Ive seen people have had issues, but I cant really say I recall ever having any.
The CMSS3d Headphone is really nice, never had the space or possibility for a real surround setup (sharing appartments, latenight gaming, usually online with headset for ventrilo/TS2), but that feature delivers some pretty good surround.
BF2 was really impressive when I got the board.

That said, EAX5 doesnt seem to have broken through really, sure Q4 sounded awesome but other then that.

And all the talk about how Vista makes HW acceleration obsolete, AFAIK the only thing is DS3d isnt using HW anymore, so older titles need the wrapper Creative has provided for compatibility (Alchemy), otherwise EAX via DS3d wont be HW accelerated anymore.
newer games using OpenAL and other compatible APIs can still use the HW acceleration and features even in Vista (correct me if Im wrong here)

If Creative comes out with a new PCI-E card to replace their X-Fi line and expects all of us to buy it because it's the next best thing they are going to support, they are out of their friggin' minds.

They have really declined over the years. The hardware is not bad, but my god, the driver support is horrendous. October 2006 for XP drivers?

I'll use onboard audio before I get another Creative product. I have a X-Fi and I'm only using it because there's nothing else out there.

Which is basically more of the same. Even if x-fi is your thing, there really is no need to go beyond just the basic model. Using analog outs, there really is only so far that having a high SnR can take you before the high amounts of EMI present in a PC makes anything higher pointless.

X-ram is a total gimmick, and anything else of that nature they might add is probably going to be a gimmick as well. Hell, we don't even need HW acceleration for sound anymore - its pointless and even counterproductive. Especially in newer games where its becoming increasingly common to use their own sound rendering system.

Don't bother with the cheesy expansion bay thing either. Rather, use that money towards a better speaker system that includes a nice receiver with even better controls and features, and it isn't tied to your sound card.

Other way round, XP has a much larger install base. More to the point, MS wants the soundcard market to dry up.

Devs won't bother supporting devices that have little to no support from the IHV and they sure won't bother adding code that could lead to a game crash because the IHV can't or won't write a proper and stable driver.
