Frankly I don't see that it is tremendously less in-depth than other games of the genre. Granted I have not played Galactic Civ. but it seems that rather than lacking in certain features (such as more developed diplomacy) it has exchanged them in favor of RTS elements that do not exist in other 4X games. It is what it claims to be, in that regard. I find that more often than not, with these kinds of games, the perceived depth has as much to do with how much the game captures your imagination as its actual presentation.

I've played about 16 hours of it and I'm already bored with it. People say that it's a very deep 4X game but I don't see it. First of all there is no single player campaign, so it's really half a game for $44.95. Second, it's not nearly as in-depth as say MOO-MOO2 from 10+ years ago. There isn't much diplomacy, no espionage or ground combat (At least MOO/2 had a 2D screen where your forces battled it out) and the pirate idea is just stupid. They just spawn fleets and attack whatever player loses a bidding war. It's like watching an auction on eBay, you have to keep raising a bounty on the other player until the last possible second or the pirates attack. This happens about every 10 minutes or so. I also have a problem with the combat, where basically 2 fleets sit toe to toe and slug it out, no maneuvering, no z-axis. Nothing really moves except the fighters and bombers unless someone retreats, which the AI always does when it loses a capital ship. No damage is modeled on the ships and weapon effects stay the same even if you upgrade them.

I haven't tried online yet because it crashes every hour or so. Maybe it would be better, I don't know. I'm disappointed in the game, I expected more.

It's been getting very good scores from the review sites thus far. Maybe I'll pick up a used copy in a month or so. (I cancelled my order when Orange Box went on sale last week)

I've been playing it for a couple of weeks. The AI is challenging, and you have lots of research options and different ways to configure your ships. My biggest complaint is the late game grind, especially in large/huge maps; taking out every single planet with no real opposition (after you've destroyed AI's fleets) gets boring.

Yes I still play this game regularly. Still learning it to a degree as well. I really like it though, it's definitely worth the purchase!

I agree, this is pretty tedious and you usually have to deal with annoying pirate fleets while this is going on. Not a deal breaker but it would be nice for some alternate victory conditions to be implemented. It gets especially irritating when you have to leave a garrison at each planet to make sure loose colony ships don't drag it out even longer.

Oh I solved the pirate problem - they leave you alone if you nuke the crap out of their base. When I move into a new system, they're my first target.

Ok, I think I'll give it a shot.

I'm usually too lazy and just keep paying them off. I figure the bounty costs are about equal to fleet losses I'd incur by invading them. Might be wrong though, I'll try nuking them next game I play.

Well, sixteen capships plus fifty or sixty escorting cruisers tends to make short work of the pirates. And its a good way to rack up experience points for your ships. 9th and 10th level battleships and dreadnoughts are scary good!

I play it with Hard AI and is not so challenging as i thought
