congrats on the laptop MikeC! I've had the same one for a few months now and I'm loving it too. It works great for just chilling in the living room workin in 3dsmax or maya, the convenience is just awesome.

Laptops are so much less hassle because you cant mess with them like you can a desktop.

Ditto. The mobo on the Sager we bought my son a couple of years ago has been replaced twice. Sweet monitor though and it was powered by a 6800 Ultra.

How's battery life? That's one big sacrifice with mine; I'm lucky to get 2 hours out of it, and that's with all power saving features enabled and the LCD turned down to just above half brightness.

The other sacrifice is the portability, but I guess that comes with the territory when buying a 17" laptop. It's a beast.
Nice. Did you do the GPU swap yourself or did you send it back to the vendor and let them do it?

Haven't check battery life yet. Is there any particular program people use to test battery life (like playing a DVD)?

Vizio? I had bad experience with Vizio.

What size is that? I think I bought mines around 20 inch, I can't remember what size, it was $500 TV. I was never happy because the regular cable picture sucked horribly.

How's yours, MikeC? With a regular cable TV, or you only use it for gaming?

I did it myself. I also swapped the cpu for an older model that could be overclocked via a pin-mod. Has worked wonderfully. Dell has very complete disassembly guides on their websites, so it was a snap. Here's a link to the guides for yours.

You can try Battery Eater Pro for benchmarking your battery life. Another great notebook tool is I8KFanGUI, which lets you control your fans and monitor numerous temperatures. I don't know for sure that it'll work with your model, but it works with numerous Dell notebooks, so you could try.

And lastly, you should look into Notebook Hardware Control. With it, you can control CPU voltage (undervolting for longer battery life), as well as things like hard drive power and noise management, and monitor battery wear level.

Here's a few pics of mine:

Prior to disassembly:

The 6800 removed and cleaned up (was just applying Arctic Silver this time):

After replacement with the 7800GTX (note the extra heatpipe, and how it fits with the existing northbridge heatsink; the chassis is the same as the XPS):

It was one of their 42-inch models, but the quality of standard cable is clearly inferior when compared to high-definition output.

The TV is almost exclusively used for watching TV and high-definition service is provided by Cox Cable. When friends visit I make it a point to demonstrate the difference between standard and high-definition and they always notice.

With Cox, high definition stations have a leading 7 so I can switch between the same show to perform a comparison (for example Fox, which is channel 14 for standard cable and 714 for high-definition).

At one time, Vizio may have been producing inferior products, but in the past year they have been taking away market share from the big names like Sony and Samsung. Although the picture quality of the Vizio was marginally lower than similar offerings from Sony and Samsung, I could not justify paying almost twice as much for the high-end models.
