New hard drive making a clicking noise

I just got a Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive. When I power on the pc it makes a clicking noise similar to someone tapping a pencil on a desk. There is nothing on the drive yet and the motherboard, Intel BOXD975XBX2KR LGA 775 Intel 975X ATX, does not recognize that the drive is there both in BIOS and when attempting to install windows. I called Intel and was told to upgrade my BIOS.

I've installed drives before but never a SATA and I've never heard this clicking noise before. Is it bad? Should I upgrade the BIOS as Intel stated. They seemed to be treating it as though "Heck it might work" idea as the tech didn't seem assured the problem would be fixed by it.

Do I need to do something else with the drive before it will be recognized? I have the jumper between pins 1 and 2 which is called "normal operation" and beyond that all I have done is plug in the SATA from my mobo to my drive as well as the power from the psu.

Best way to describe the noise is Tick...3/4 sec...tick... 3/4 sec tick etc etc. It sounds like tapping a pen on a desk.

It is probably DOA. The Clicking noise usually happens when a hard drive breaks.

Take it out of the PC and hit it with a hammer. Works like a charm!
