Angry This was may be my last NVIDIA hardware !

Some time ago i spend much money for a 8800 GTS 640 MB card.

The Linux drivers was bad, this card was much slower (Applications: KDE, Compiz, Firefox, Flash ) compared to my old GF 7950.

But i hopes the next driver will solve this problem.

I wait for new drivers, but the new drivers don't make it better.

Some time later comes a cheaper 8800 GTS 512 MB out (With more theoretical performance)

Now I have lost much money by baying the 8800 GTS 640 MB card some time before.

I pay for something that i have never become.
More Performance !

Everybody on this forums tells, something is wrong with the performance for the new GF 8xxx cards.

I fell me deceived by NVIDIA.

This was my last deal with NVIDIA.

In our company (more than 30 systems) i stop to order NVIDIA hardware to!

the performance of MY 8600GT is perfect.

And it is normal, that later cards are more powerfull.

Well, if you don't understand that maybe you are the wrong person to order hardware?

i believe he is talking about the 8800, not 8600. even my card is not perfect, however, the same recurring problem i have is infrequent and has been ongoing since linux/nvidia came together so i doubt there will ever be a solution, just attempts to make it less frequent. i find it hard to believe you have yet to find an nvrm message in syslog or not have your system freeze. even my windows box crashes once in a blue moon with an even more generic log than nvrm xid...but like i said, i can deal 1 or 2 issues every 3-4 months.

That's the irony, there are few practical alternatives and no ideal solutions for Linux in the graphics card market, I think it would need a whole new player to come into the scene and focus primarily on being Linux platform hardware. LOL and good luck are very common replies to threads like this and its a shame that having spent a lot of money the original poster like many others, feels cheated. My advice is to never, ever buy new graphics hardware, buy second hand, that way, nvidia do not get your money and you still get the same laughable driver support.

Well, newer cards with good linux support are normally more powerful.

But why is my old GF 7950 much more powerful in KDE, Firefox, Flash, Compiz as the new 8800 GTS?

Ohh yes i forget, more powerful only with Windows drivers...

The good Linux support comes later.

And on the waiting time we lose money.

I hope this was easy enough for you to understand it ...

ugh. don't remind me. graphics and wow are the only reason i have a windows box. however, wine/wow/nvidia have been stable enough with my 7400 for the last few months to justify making the move on wiping out my last windows box. time to see how things go with a 7900. don't worry though bill! i own an xbox 360.

yes second hand is good, besids the performance increase between the 7800gtx ,7900gt and 8800gt is a laugh

Well your cpu should be powerful enough to take advantage of the 8800 and second if you are just using 'old' games or things like that which don't take advantage of the extra horse power (read shaders) then you won't gain much.

I'm running the .09s on my 8800 SSC GTS, and performance is down from earlier releases, but certainly not abysmal. IQ is fantastic. The majority of apps and couple of games (FF, Compiz, all 2d, Q4, Doom 3, ) run fine.

If you read through any NV windows driver forum you'll see plenty of growing pains there as well, or try Rage3d and you'll see ATI issues as well.

There is no one single "perfect" solution out there right now for either platform.

But if you *must* move to ATI, good luck with it, hope it works for you.

Funny, I just came back to nvidia after years of ati because of what I think is better linux support. If nothing else nvidia has this board set up and answers questions.

Don't get me wrong, I like ati cards too. Really I think it's a tossup whether something will work at all but even if it works making it work well always requires some tweaking.
