Default Fast question-How to get best of 500gb WD

For me its mainly about performance for gaming.
currently I have 3 partitions 20gb for system 340 for gaming and 100 for software and movies.
Is that best I could do ? Or maybe its better to have one partition for evertyhing expect windows ?

btw. What defragmentation and other progs for xp and vista ?

For me I would have 4 125GB partitions, with C: Windows D: Games and so on.

As for defragmentation I use Perfect Disk 8

It's a good distribution.

Maybe you should consider creating 2 partitions for XP/Vista, and 2 more for your gaming/software.

Using a 'smaller' partition for your OS has a lot of advantages, in special to backup your partition when you finish the installation & customization of your OS, and restore it when your OS stops working

You can restore the OS partition without losing any of your data. And you can restore the backup in 5 mins or less. Much faster than reinstalling your OS.

About defrag software, i use perfectdisk on XP/XP-64/2K3/2K. About Vista, i dunno.

IMO you'd probably have much slower performance from doing something like that. Remember that your HDD's fastest read speeds are on the outermost tracks which is where data is written to the disk first. So with that big gap all of your programs are going to take longer to load because they are on the slowest part of the disk. Also, chances are your swap file will be on the beginning of the drive, and so whenever your loading programs your drive will have to seek back and forth across the entire HD whenever it needs to read / write from your swap or read something in your OS install.

I always just leave it as one partition and then keep data on another drive or another storage area.

If you get a drive with a higher data density it will increase read speeds without too much penalty to seek times. Then just take and partition it to only use the first 60GB or so and that will keep the data on the fastest part of the disk and in theory should help with seek times since the head won't be jumping back and forth across the HDD.

I alloted 50GB for the OS and computer critical programs, and then I have the other 450GB's for all the other programs and files.

it came out to be 39GB and 426GB. It's working real well too. Reformatting is going to be a synch.

If you can, I'd avoid PATA if you're already using SATA. I've heard of problems that may stem from using both types simultaneously.

Am I wrong?
