Alright nevermind. I figured it out. I took a different' approach and now the driver is working great.
However I'd still like to know what is an X Server, and how to enable/disable it. |

Hi, first of all welcome to linux. ... And you have to learn as Linux is not Windows.
Some helpful information for installing nvidia driver can be found in the Ubuntu help pages.... Should be the first place for help and howtos. Ubuntu forums maybe helpful as well. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia In general if you do not know what 'X server' or other things mean try and search them in wikipedia.org first. Most of it is well explained.... OsZ |

Do _not_ install by hand.
Read http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490 If you really want to install by hand, even though it will break things as you don't seem experienced with Linux: the root account is deactivated / without password in Ubuntu, so you either have to use sudo or set the root password (not recommended) with sudo passwd root. Please read the post above and act accordingly. You can install the driver by using ubuntus package management, depending on your card either nvidia-glx, nvidia-glx-new or nvidia-glx-legacy. those can be installed with sudo apt-get install <drivername> or, if you don't want to do this by hand, by using the application "envy" hth Fuchs |

Please do read my posts.
Please do read the sticky posts. If you don't want to read: either use the packages provided by ubuntu or use envy. Again: if you don't do so you will have problems. You wont have X11 (graphical user interface for you) anymore, as there will be a conflict between libs provided by ubuntu and by nvidia. You can solve this, but it is easier to just use ubuntu packages. I am quite sure you wont be able to fix it without help. So please, please, do what I tell you. --- If you still want to ignore this: You can exit X11 on several ways: 1) CTRL+ALT+Backspace but the dm (kdm, gdm) will probably restart it 2) kill X with the kill / killall command 3) stop the corresponding init script, usually this is /etc/init.d/kdm or /etc/init.d/gdm or /etc/init.d/xdm stop. But again: Do _not_ install it by hand. Read the sticky posts FIRST. Read the README first. No support from me from here on if you continue anyway, good luck. --- Fuchs |

NvFuchs, thnanks for ur cooperation...
I read ur post ,the sticky & readme..I understood very little-let me tell you first. I followed BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia, tried Resticted Drivers, it says the source for the package NVidia-glx is not allowed. I checked Synaptic Pckg Manager, there is nothing under Nvidia-glx while other "Nvidia" has some... Then I tried ENVY; it wants to download via internet(that is now unavilable). It also says "handling dependencies (.....)... are required" to set up. At last I used sudo stopping X window. But the installation process asked kernell, searched net connection... My head is aching... Now what should I do? Try with Internet connection via lan? |

I don't have ubuntu nor synaptics, but there is a menu entry for configuring the source / repos, where you can enable universe, multiverse and restricted. Do so, then try the restricted driver manager again. Fuchs |

The package you're looking for in synaptic is called nvidia-glx-legacy. Synaptic should then install the required dependencies.

I checked whether nvidia-glx is installed or not using
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx and found "package nvidia-glx is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only availabe from another source.....Package nvidia has no installation candidate" It tried to download nvidia-glx-1.0.9639+2.6.22.4-14.9_i386.deb from archive.ubuntu.com/pool/... I have found nvidia-glx at http://packages.debian.org/unstable/x11/nvidia-glx Somebody pls suggest me which should I download and how I can use/install. |

hmm... I'll ask you to post your sources.list. Just copy and paste the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list.
That should tell us what repos you have enabled |
