I don't use ubuntu,
but to what i know, you should try the following:

a) open a terminal and type the following:
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run

if this doesn't work, try the following commands (in a terminal

chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run
sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run

the Desktop is usually the directory "Desktop".
open a terminal and type the following (I assume u r using gnome):

cd
cd Desktop
chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run
sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run

if anything fails, post the output inside the terminal

you need to kill X

press ctrl+alt+f1
it does display something like "foo login:"
login.

then enter that command:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
cd
cd Desktop
sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run

Another way:
exit from X by pressing ctrl+alt+<-
(the arrow above enter key)
You will something similar to this:
konner@localhost$

Use these commands to run the installer:
konner@localhost$ cd Desktop
konner@localhost$ su
type in the root/administrator password. If it will be successful the $ will turn to #.
konner@localhost#./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run
(if you type in NV and press "Tab" key it will autofill the whole name:
./NVand now press the Tab).
konner@localhost#exit
konner@localhost$startx

Please do read

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490

before installing the drivers, or you will have problems.

You are not supposed to install any drivers by hand in ubuntu, so please either use the package management or at least envy.

Installing the driver by hand without following the above instructions will break your system, as the nvidia module will fail to load after every reboot because of version conflicts.

Fuchs

(sorry for usage of bold,
but this problem is discussed here about twice a week
so we should prevent users from doing stupid things)

@zbiggy:

su will not work, as the root account is usually disabled / without password
on a ubuntu system. It is not wise to unlock the account, so he should use sudo.
As well it is _not_ recommended to install nvidia drivers by hand in ubuntu
and it will break his system (as in no more X, which is quite bad for a newbe)
when he wont do the additional steps described in the link above.

OK then how a about a specific, easily findable thread??

Us less than perfect users need SIMPLE instructions to follow. My experience in the various linux distros and forums is that replies or instructions are written for PHD's in programming.

C'mon guys lets get intelligent here. If Linux is EVER to achieve the status it should it has to be usable by idiots (me included) !

There even is a thread about installing on Ubuntu in the sticky postings at the head of the page!
It does not contain a lot of info, but at least it recommends to use the distribution-specific driver packages and not the .run file
