Default Can a CPU make NOISE???

I just installed a new CPU(Q6600), and the thing seems to me making a niose when its processing, and I don't understand how that can be. It sounds like some kind of digital electrical noise, and my system was silent before I put this chip in. Its similar to the seeking niose from a HDD, only it sounds electrical. Its so loud I can hear it over my two 120mm fans and with the case closed up. It only happens when the chip is processing something.

What could this possibly be? As near as I can tell the noise come from behind my cooler....

I doubt that is from the chip itself but could be from the power electronics near by. PSUs and transformers can and do hum and my 8800GTX (as others have reported) makes noise as a function of use but, again, I suspect is related to power circuitry. Perhaps the new chip is putting a strain on the MB.

Failing electrolydic capacitors can make noise like that. Are you sure the noise comes from the CPU socket area? If so probably one of the voltage regulation module capacitors is making the nosie.

I wondered if it was from a capacitor or something. I don't have any instruments for locating the sound source so all I can say is it come from the area behind my cooler. I really thought the 680i would be fine with a Q6600, that the issues were only with the 1333 chips, but I've had nothing but issues with this chip so far.

it's probably a capacitor. capacitors are notorious for making a high pitched squeak sound when it's under load. it kind of sounds like a cricket chirping.

dells 1505 laptops have been pretty notorious for producing a rapid mono-tone clicking sound near the cpu area when the laptop is powered by the battery (Core DUO).

My mobo doesn't use inductors like that.

Coil whine, inductor sing, etc. are fairly common on video boards these days. Switching mode power supplies both the PSU and components on the motherboard can do it too.

Here's a recording I made of my 8800ultra making noise while running a benchmark:

http://www.dawnitgirl.com/gaudio/8800u-music.wma

Note: it sounds MUCH louder than it really is in person due to the way it was recorded.

Some folks on another forum said it could be mixed into a song. Here it is!

http://www.dawnitgirl.com/gaudio/trancemitter.wma.

To summarize those noises are completely normal and do NOT necessarily point to a problem.

I get noise too, but from my 8800gt. But it only appears during video streams, like when I start up the witcher, during logo videos and intro it "squeels" but when those are gone, so is the noise.
Odd. This never was a problem before was it ?
none of my older nvidia cards made any noise like that..
