Default BFGTech 9600 GT OC & Gentoo lockup

I have gone through basically every nvidia-drivers version, and almost all of them locked my system up immediately after startx. I have found that the 100.14.19 drivers don't lock up my system. I do get an error message, though:

(WW) NVIDIA: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:0) found
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

The only thing I can think of is the card isn't going to work. It's a BFGTech 9600 GT OC 512 MB DDR3, PCIe x16 2.0

I have also tried using idle=poll and maxcpus=1 and pci=nommconf

Is there anyway to get this to work? Or is it to new of a card to be supported.

As support for 8800gt and the new gts was only added in .19 I think it's a safe bet that that neither the 8800 gs nor the 9600 gt is supported yet (or not properly at least).

You can try though to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file though - some distros add the pci id to the device section and when you change your graphics card that id may change - so look for something like "BusID PCI:1:0:0" and then simply delete (or comment) that entire line and try to restart the X server.

Looking forward to hear how it goes - at least one shop has the 9600gt in stock around here and I'm tempted to pick one up too ;-)

Ah well, caved in and ordered one today anyway, should be able to pick it up tomorrow - I'll let you know how it goes :-)

Any word from nvidia reps when we can expect drivers that fully support the card? Worst case I'll just have to stick to my gf7900gs for the time being ;-)

The only other video card I have is a 32MB PCI card...

That should be fun until the drivers come out

I'll try what you said. See what happens

I'm thinking about getting a 9600GT card as well but i won't if I have to wait for the linux driver

I did come across a newish linux driver version 171.05

I was wondering Willie if you could try it out to see if it works with the 9600GT and report back here

Heres the link

ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/171.05/

TIA

It works! I installed the newest drivers that were linked by DarkVader, followed the readme and was able to startx!

Oh man, I was so pissed that the card wasn't working. I can't wait to do some crazy ****. Good luck to everyone else

the only problem - the 171 driver is not intended for graphic cards but tesla systems.

So what about 169.12?

However, this new 169.12 display driver doesn't introduce support for the GeForce 9600GT and its official changes are limited to maintenance items.

Seems to work on a 8600GT card

"the 171.05 driver during our initial tests had worked just fine when using it in a non-Tesla environment."

Got it working too with the 171.05 drivers - I'll play around a bit and see how it goes.

Card seems to run very cool while idle - hope these readings are correct...

This is in a very quiet case with 2 case fans running at minimum - temps seem to be identical with my previous card a gf7900gs while idle...now onto the load tests ;-)

Card is a EVGA SC 9600gt btw:

Update:
171.05 is a bit flakey on this card, which is no surprise, the drivers weren't really made for the gf9600gt:
Exiting a game froze X for a few seconds on several occasions and compizfusion segfaulted (never had that before). It is possible to play though - tested WoW, Audiosurf, M&M Dark Messiah - I had the later running at 1680x1050 with HDR at around 30fps - very nice - HDR was pretty much unusable on my old gf7900gs.
WoW performance was pretty much identical with what I got on the gf7900gs - but I guess I could ramp up AA and AS now without taking a hit to the framerate.

Temps under load seem to be around 55-60c - the 60c is a guess the highest I've seen so far is 55c, but due to the freeze when exiting a game I haven't been able ot get accurate readings yet...running the games windowed also didn't seem to work...

Noise levels seem to be around the same as my gf7900gs with a Zalman VF900 at minimum settings - so this card seems to run *very* quietly.
