RAM issue on Pentium 3 w/ SDRAM

This is an old Motherf'in computer. It's been having some problems according to its owner, and I experienced some of those problems. But after fiddling around with the ram configurations and such, I finally got it working. I'm running Orthos to make sure that all the hardware is stable and working properly.

Now, here's a problem that I ran into... System info and CPU-Z are each reporting something different:

I've already identified one stick as 128MB. The other stick says it's 512MB on the sticker. According to CPU-Z, I believe the sticker. However, Windows doesn't recognize the stick as 512MB; it only recognizes it as 256MB. To further complicate things, this computer only has XP Pro w/ Service Pack 1 installed.

I need help. Here's what CPU-Z has to say about the computer:

Does anyone know a solution to this? And does anyone know of a way I can get Service Pack 2 without using a torrent client?

I remember issues with double and single sided SDRAM on some boards. This is most likely your issue.

The manual says the board supports double-sided modules, so I have no idea. This seems to be a hardware issue, but it can't hurt to update to SP2.

The Intel 810 and 815 chipsets don't actually support more than 512 megs of ram. Try removing the 128 and see if the 512 is recognized properly, if it still isn't then you've run into the other problem with this old crap, memory module density. Get 2 low density 256 meg modules and be done with it.

I agree with this.

Its also worth checking your system resources (ctrl-alt-delete) just to make sure that the system doesn't have 640Mb available. I've seen the general system properties tab report things incorrectly before.

I picked up a "brand new" 800mhz pIII micro atx from work the other day, 815 chipset.
It has 128mb already,
So another 128mb is the sensible limit then?

The poor thing has just been sitting on a shelf doing nothing as the robot it went with never got used ,ever
