To everyone talking about not whining and being grateful you are ridiculous. I payed for a product and I expect it to work. I am not 'thankful' that Nvidia let me dish out hundreds of dollars for their cards. They are the ones that should be 'thankful'. In exchange for the money we payed for their product it is their job to ensure that the product works properly. This is a real simple concept. If you went to the store and bought something and it was broken when you got it home you would take it back. You wouldn't be thankful for the broken piece of junk and you certainly wouldn't be called a whiner when you asked to have it fixed. If anyone here has a problem it is you for implying that I should express loyalty towards anyone or anything particularly a company that provides a product. I don't get personal with manufacturers.

As for the problem, adjusting image quality made no difference whatsoever.

That's hard to tell for a specific application and setup until you
have the product applied: i.e. two months ago, i purchased two
8800GTs in order to driver a triple head setup. The motivation for
buying those cards was that the flight simulator X-Plane is very GPU
demanding when using photo-scenaries and the forrest overlay.

Everything works pretty nice with X-Plane and i'm also having the
impression that frame rate increased (didn't yet made any formal
benchmarks). However, UT2004 doesn't work very well any more!

I'm pretty sure nvidia will sort this issues out over time, but you
typically don't expect this kind of regressions to happen in the frist
place: as already mentioned, there is not that huge number of games
out there for Linux and everything was fine with two 7800GTX and
100.14.23).

I certainly could have sent the cards back to the dealer, getting the
money back, but i decided to keep 'em because the flight simulator is
the more important "application" for me for now. Also, i'm confident
that nvidia will fix the remaining issue over time. From what i understand
the Linux crew at nvidia is not that big, but i hope they will have enough
time in future to do more (semi-automated) regression testing in order
to improove customers experience.

regards

Bernhard

Please keep the discussion civil. I don't want to have to close the thread.

Like Dragoran said, I believe this issue is the same as the one reported in http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=108491, which will be fixed in a future driver release.

This problem is also happening on FlightGear. So it is a driver problem and it started for me with the 169.X series of drivers.

this problem is posted all over the board. It's a DXT5 issue. It spans various card generations but is only found in 169. series drivers.

Well yea, but strictly speaking your paying for something that works with nvidia drivers, there are several companies that do the actual manufacturing.
No one pays for the drivers per se.
That being said it is reasonable to assume something to work properly yes, keeping in mind that these kinds of things are constantly changing. I prefer nvidia drivers for the simple reason that the other guys are royal pain in the ass to install under linux by anyone other than the person who wrote them.
Wasnt it mentioned somewhere not to use the highest 'performance' setting on the slider?

I still have to ask how is any of this related to nvidia's linux drivers when they all worked perfectly for me under rhel 3?
