Default GF9600GT + x86_64-169.12 = Black Screen

Hi,

Sparkle GeForce 9600GT HP 512MB Ram.
Mainboard: Asus P5B Deluxe (latest Bios)
CPU: E6400
Driver: x86_64-169.12
Kernel: Vanilla 2.6.24
Xorg: X.Org X Server 1.4.0, Release Date: 5 September 2007

If i enable:
Option "Coolbits" "1"
in xorg.conf, i only get a Black Screen, after xinit.
Sometimes i get a black screen, with moving white dots on it.
Or the system Reboots.

If i disable Coolbits, the System works perfect.

Any solutions on this ?

hmm so the 169.12 drivers work with the GF9600gt?
Might give them a whirl then - using 171.05 here but that's a bit flakey (and actually older than 169.12). Never had coolbits enabled though, so not sure if that woulnd't cause 171.05 to blackscreen too...

Also have a look here for more info:

Yes works perfect...
But i can no longer underclock the card... So it is about 50C in idle mode

So the 9600GT is supported after all by 169.12??

Gave the 169.12 driver a try now - seems to work better than 171.05 (at least I haven't had any compiz segfaults/freezes anymore so far).
The nvidia-settings panel reports the card as "unknown" though - not sure if that makes any difference though, temperature readings seem to be correct and fan speed is properly controlled too (automatic)
So yeah - 169.12 works with GF9600gt.
Haven't tried the coolbits option though yet - this is supposed to add extra controls in nvidia-settings right?

Great, great news, as I may get my 9600GT tomorrow!
Coobits give clock frequency control in nvidia-settings. It would be interesting if that is working too.

Could you comment about 2D speed with 9600GT? Is it as slow as reported for 8xxx series?

hmm...one thing I noticed is that switching tabs in firefox has a weird delay (both with 169.12 and 171.05) - might be a firefox bug though...other than that everything seemed fine though...
Any partciular test cases where lack of 2d speed would become apparent?

Also found that audiosurf is running slower than with my previous card (gf7900gs), but that might be a problem with either wine or audiosurf itself.

I don't know if that's fast or not, but as far as I see it's on par with a 7950... How about 1000 iteractions?

Ok, 9600GT here and working now. Problem is 169.12 didn't work for me, I had terrible screen corruption - I though the card was defective at first. 171.05 ("tesla" drivers) did the trick, though, as the card is properly recognised and everything works apparently fine - even twinview and confiz fusion.

As for the 2D performance and gtkperf, I do get slower performance with 9600GT - 7,75 s with 7900GT (compiz) and 10,47s (compiz) / 8,49s (metacity) with 9600 GT. Point is, it isn't really noticeable. Moving windows, scrolling documents, firefox, video, coolbits/overcloking, fan control (!!), no problems at all. So either Nvidia actually fixed the drivers, G94 hardware isn't as affected as G90/92, or that "problem" is hugely overrated.

Switched back to 171.05 today and booted emerald while I was at it - now using gtk-window-decorator with compiz, which gave me the following results:

GtkPerf 0.40 - Starting testing: Tue Mar 4 21:48:32 2008 (100 iterations)

GtkEntry - time: 0.03
GtkComboBox - time: 1.09
GtkComboBoxEntry - time: 0.99
GtkSpinButton - time: 0.13
GtkProgressBar - time: 0.09
GtkToggleButton - time: 0.51
GtkCheckButton - time: 0.49
GtkRadioButton - time: 0.57
GtkTextView - Add text - time: 0.43
GtkTextView - Scroll - time: 0.28
GtkDrawingArea - Lines - time: 0.24
GtkDrawingArea - Circles - time: 0.30
GtkDrawingArea - Text - time: 0.21
GtkDrawingArea - Pixbufs - time: 0.45
---
Total time: 5.81

GtkPerf 0.40 - Starting testing: Tue Mar 4 21:48:42 2008 (1000 iterations)

GtkEntry - time: 0.13
GtkComboBox - time: 10.58
GtkComboBoxEntry - time: 9.52
GtkSpinButton - time: 1.19
GtkProgressBar - time: 0.66
GtkToggleButton - time: 4.94
GtkCheckButton - time: 4.79
GtkRadioButton - time: 5.61
GtkTextView - Add text - time: 31.53
GtkTextView - Scroll - time: 10.47
GtkDrawingArea - Lines - time: 2.28
GtkDrawingArea - Circles - time: 2.88
GtkDrawingArea - Text - time: 1.94
GtkDrawingArea - Pixbufs - time: 4.44
---
Total time: 90.96

The results were on par with metacity in this driver - so 171.05 is also faster for 2d than 169.12 - and gtk-window-decorator seems to be a good deal faster than emerald.

Also important to note is that some of the gtkperf tests don't really scale properly when you run larger iterations, so you can't compare 100 to a 1000 iterations - notably the gtktextview tests (simply due to the fact that a progressivley much larger window needs to be refreshed on every iteration). The other tests all seem to be a bit faster though due to the minimized impact of any startup delay.

Btw how and where did you get fancontrol? When I enable coolbits I do get frequency control in nvidia-settings but no fan control tab...

Btw - the reason I switched back to 171.05 is that in ETQW I'm getting roughly 3 times (!) the peformance with 171.05 versus 169.12. In 169.12 the game was struggling to manage 20fps at 1680x1050 (all settings maxed, vsync, no AA though), with 171.05 framerate is pretty much stuck at 60
