Default Dismal 2D performance with 8800GTS

I'm seeing horrible 2D performance with a 8800GTS.

gtkperf 1000 iterations

8800GTS nvidia 169.12: 243.73s

Compared to my 7600GT

7600GT nvidia 169.12: 111.94s
7600GT nouveau: 93.19s

I was expecting to see at least some performance increase with the 8800GTS. If for no other reason than the higher memory speed.

I was using 1000 iterations (test rounds). I'm assuming your results are with the default 100 rounds.

I guess it depends also on your screen resolution.

Here are my results but keep in mind that I have two screens in twinview configuration with a total resolution of 2960x1050 on a 8800GT 512MB!

GtkPerf 0.40 - Starting testing: Sat Mar 1 22:07:13 2008

GtkEntry - time: 0.27
GtkComboBox - time: 13.82
GtkComboBoxEntry - time: 10.30
GtkSpinButton - time: 1.73
GtkProgressBar - time: 0.77

gtkperf is not the best of benchmarks.
I would recommend starting with a run of 100 rounds to get things 'warm' followed by the real benchmark. Using at least 1000 rounds to get rid of some noise.
The results are very influenced by which gtk engine/theme is used. It was after all created to measure the speed of gtk engines.

That said. Seeing 2.5 times worse performance with a 8800GTS compared to a 7600GT is terrible.

I'm getting almost same results with different window sizes on 7300GT.
Result using 1280x1024, 169.09, 1000 iterations:

Why hasn't NVIDIA acknowledged this yet? With all the test hardware they have, it's not hard to swap a 7 series card with an 8 series card and measure the huge performance differences in drawing speed.

I'am experiencing the same w/ the legacy drivers
(note I 'm not using any kernel prepatch or snapshot).
Specific perfomance decrease on GtkDrawingArea, usually it doesn't take more than 3 secs, usually ... all in all the 100s roundup 8s ~ 20s (depending the theme), but now the patetic and insane time of 50 seconds or more

theme: ClearlooksClassic
GtkPerf 0.40 - Starting testing: Sat Mar 1 12:22:37 2008

GtkEntry - time: 0,42
GtkComboBox - time: 12,68
GtkComboBoxEntry - time: 8,40
GtkSpinButton - time: 1,78
GtkProgressBar - time: 1,47
GtkToggleButton - time: 2,39
GtkCheckButton - time: 2,18
GtkRadioButton - time: 3,07
GtkTextView - Add text - time: 3,05
GtkTextView - Scroll - time: 1,42
GtkDrawingArea - Lines - time: 1,93
GtkDrawingArea - Circles - time: 2,17
GtkDrawingArea - Text - time: 17,04
GtkDrawingArea - Pixbufs - time: 0,95
---
Total time: 58,96
I 've been trying to find the reason, downloaded xorg gtk and friends but none of them helped

I wonder wether the problem is really the rendering itself, or rather the large amount of pixmaps created&destroyed during the rendering process.
I have some patches laying arround which stop this stupid behaviour, would be interesting to measure the performance again ...

Sooner or later this will cause a lot of troubles with all the default xorg drivers beeing converted to use EXA, which migrates pixamps much more agressive to VRAM than XAA did.

Judging from the performance the nouveau driver is showing with EXA nvidia would gain quite a lot by changing to EXA.
It would probably simplify their code base quite a lot as well.
