yep, agreed IMHO, that's what the adobe flash bug down it's all about, that nasty bug that kills firefox.

It would be really positive if we could isolate this. I bet The GtkTextView difference is caused by Antialiasing/Antisotropic font settings. Maybe someone else can make run gtkperf with antialiasing off.

ugh the render extension is so ugly glue'd that I can almost get the perfect crash when disabled

Seeing that you are using the legacy driver I'm assuming you are not using a 8800 GTS?
This thread is about a direct performance decrease in changing from a 7xxx to a 8xxx card. Please don't hijack it.

So, any comment from Nvidia regarding this?
Has it been reproduced, is it being worked on etc?

NVidia never made any comments why performance is that low on the GF8, seems to be some secret stuff (maybe it can't be fixed that easily?)

Lots of people seem to be having really bad render performance on 8 series cards. testing it with qt 4.4 shows hideous window rendering slowness. Qt 4.4 apparently uses some render function that is not commonly used and uses it a lot. benchmarking render shows that only some functions are accelerated by the nvidia driver. Using gtk i can qualitatively say that its slower on my 8600m gt than an older laptop with a 6200m, whether it really is slower in gtk I cannot say but since gtk uses render as well...

I just wish someone from nvidia would confirm, deny or just ask for more information regarding 8 series performance

Generally it is believed that all 2d function calls are emulated in the 3d engine of the 8 series cards. Whilst 7 series had a dedicated 2d engine, 8xxx cards do not. In theory it should be just as fast, but its highly dependent on the driver I guess.

The whole point of ditching the 2d engine is that most development happens on the 3d engine and the fact that some of the 2d functions need the 3d engine anyways (e.g. blending). ati has done a similar thing between r5xx and r6xx.

I'm a bit (maybe more) annoyed that 2d is still slow after all the time 8 series cards have been out, and nobody from nvidia has acknowledged or denied this issue exists. Urgh, I'm sounding like a broken record.

P.S. doesn't gtkperf depend on what gtk engine you're using?

Well somebody from nvidia said the GF8 series also has a 2D engine. Maybe GF8 has a higher per-primitive overhead which can sum up with the many very small/cheap operations 2D does.

yes sorry, anyways I'm highly interested in this topic because I'm seeking for a replacement for my video card.
Now taking a clooser look on another pc with a 6100 IGP the 2D tearing is still there I mean compared with an Ati r200, it 's so evident that's there a lot room for improvement over 2D, IMHO most benchmarks posted here are meaningless.-
The panorama over the open source drivers it's just completly different to nvidia's or ati's propetary drivers. 2D is optimised over the open source drivers.

You should try running something like an isometric game.... FIFE, UFOAI, lincity, transport tycoon etc. A 2d optimized driver should handle that with no fuzz, (isometric=2d ). Now this is huge deception, the logic behind the decision of not bothering over 2D is quiet weak, there are hundred of games that still used 2D (all sprite based games :-) ....

I mean try opening 200 hundred instances of FIFEhttp://www.fifengine.de/ and time it.

ps_: sorry maybe this a little bit off topic

yea, you're probably right. Even gdi+ under vista seems slightly slower than I remember it (could be wrong as I'm comparing it to xp)
