Default 20GB PS3... your thoughts?

well im considering getting a 20GB PS3. mainly for BD playback and some exclusives. i might put linux on it as well. the reason im looking at the 20GB model is the price (under $300 on ebay) and the backwards compatibility (hardware BC). dont care about wireless and i can upgrade the HDD if need be.

is this a good idea? will there be problems with BD because it's an older model? let me know if this is a bad/good idea.

thx

You know the temperature in here is about the same as the old converted department store I worked in awhile back.

I wonder if mom got my e-mail this morning about finances.

Do I really have to twitch to get the NIA to recognize my commands or can I go Matrix style?

Why the hell are these documents organized this way, whomever wrote Global360 was a crack head.

I need to remember to update the guild resist gear spreadsheet tonight, should I raid Kara? Meh, not really feeling like raiding tonight, maybe I can get someone else to lead it.

Oh great here comes the trash can guy, god he's annoying, why doesn't he just dispose of the trash without his witty comments on the weather and asking me how my weekend was despite it being Thursday and him asking me every day this week about my weekend...

I wonder who reads my internet logs here @ work, is there a section 8 for contractors?

Don't forget to heat up the oven when I get home and put in the lasagna...I always forget to heat it up...

*looks around*

Oh....heh...I guess...you weren't interested in my thoughts? I'd say go for it if you can get one at a good price.

wtf?

ViN, There wont be any difference in BD playback from the 20GB then the newer models. The only difference is the hardware backwards compatibility and wifi. You will also benefit from having 4 USBs rather then only 2 of the current low end sku.

You'll be fine with either new or old. I'm using a PAL PS3 with the software BC and it works great. Upscaling is pretty good. DVD look a lot better through my PS3 compared to my 5 disc Sony DVD player and BD looks and sounds even better. I say if you can snag one under 300 got for it and add me on PSN. ::

Thumbs up Re: 20GB PS3... your thoughts?

I'm using a 20GB model, works great. Blu-ray playback is fine, and backwards-compatibility is great.

Only thing you might run into with the 20 GB model is when PSN starts renting (hd) movies. Between that, demos, and game installs, it could fill up pretty quick...

Noticing more and more games now require a HD install of some sort, how much do they usually take?

I'm looking at the 40GB version and this HD install stuff looks like it could eat up the drive pretty fast.

Easily upgradeable mate. Thinking of adding a 250gb hard drive to mine for 60 from dabs. I probably won't need all that space but hey might as well have it.

+1, if you're someone who doesn't like deleting things off your hdd then just upgrade it with a big enough drive first. That way you won't have to move things over from the original drive later down the road.

The largest install game on PS3 right now is DMC4 which installs almost, if not, the whole game on the HDD, 4gb of data.

Ahhh ofcourse!

Just found an article... any 2.5-inch SATA notebook HD will do the job.

Would there be any real difference between using a 5400 or 7200 rpm one?

I know in desktop terms it would.

Well, the gf bought me a Blu-Ray remote for the PS3 I haven't bought yet, so that's a hint .... think she wants a Blu-Ray player and now my mind is made up. lol

Got my Elite hooked up on my new 40" Sony Bravia panel and don't miss PC gaming at all anymore.
