Ok well my laptop isn't great, 64 MB Vid card, 1k Ram.
My friend has a laptop with 128 Vid, 512 Ram, FFXI runs on his laptop at 1280 x 768 with 25-29 FPS, my laptop runs with 1024 x 768 at 5-15 FPS.. I've tried lowering etc but it seems my graphics are very good compared to his... My characters and edges look perfect, his don't, all game effects are off etc, any idea how to make my game run at atleast steady 15 FPS? Thank you.

be sure to reduce the background resolution to match ffxi's resolution or less. update the driver to latest version. don't run ffxi in windowed mode (it's slower). when you're in game, open the in-game menu and reduce how many characters allowed on screen, hide the effects (bard's song effect for example), etc.
you might be able to gain some performance from that.

Rememebr that ffxi is really CPU dependent. not so much on the GPU (with the exception of nvidia 8xxx compatibility issue.) So in your case it may have something to do with your processor speed?
