Default RHEL5 w/ 169.12 with XFX 8600GT problems

I am beating my head against a wall here. I am trying to get a XFX 8600GT video card to work on a dell box and I can't get it to work. I have an Nvidia driver from their site and it configures okay but when I try to start the Xserver I get:

(II) Setting vga for screen 0.
(**) NVIDIA(0): Depth 8, (--) framebuffer bpp 8
(==) NVIDIA(0): Default visual is PseudoColor
(==) NVIDIA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
(**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling RENDER acceleration
(II) NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X extensions is
(II) NVIDIA(0): enabled.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please see the COMMON PROBLEMS section in the README for
(EE) NVIDIA(0): additional information.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "ramdac"
(II) UnloadModule: "wfb"
(II) UnloadModule: "fb"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.\

The system came with an ATI card so I know the PCI-E interface is working. I found guidance to drop the depth for the "no screens" issue to 8, but that didn't work.

first: please don't name the output of the nvidia-bug-report script '*doc'.
It is most annoying when openoffice pops up for a file that is really simply text. And please don't use zip, if you have to pack it

About your problem: There is something very fishy going on with your system.

stuff like this:
(EE) end of block range 0xffffef < begin 0xfffffff0
(EE) end of block range 0x1ffffef < begin 0xfffffff0
(EE) end of block range 0x1ffef < begin 0xfffffff0

and this:
(EE) end of block range 0x1ffffef < begin 0xfffffff0
(EE) end of block range 0xffffef < begin 0xfffffff0
(EE) end of block range 0xffffef < begin 0xfffffff0
(EE) end of block range 0x1ffffef < begin 0xfffffff0
(EE) end of block range 0x1ffffef < begin 0xfffffff0
(EE) end of block range 0x1ffffef < begin 0xfffffff0

looks like some bios screwup?

I would try updating the bios or a more recent kernel.

The 'real error' is this:

NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 169.12 Thu Feb 14 17:53:07 PST 2008
NVRM: failed to map registers!!
NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x10:0x32:1336)
NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed
usb 6-3: USB disconnect, address 2
NVRM: failed to map registers!!
NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x10:0x32:1336)
NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed
NVRM: failed to map registers!!
NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x10:0x32:1336)
NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed

and maybe someone more knowledgeable can tell us, if this is caused by the errors shown in the xorg.0.log.

yep, e820 and mtrr look funny too
Code:
/proc/mtrr
reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=65536MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0xcff00000 (3327MB), size= 1MB: uncachable, count=1
reg02: base=0xd0000000 (3328MB), size= 256MB: uncachable, count=1
reg03: base=0xe0000000 (3584MB), size= 512MB: uncachable, count=1

another thing, your Graphiccards BARs are mapped beyond the 32bit-range
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600 GT (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: XFX Pine Group Inc. Unknown device 4016
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 169
	Memory at 12a000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
	Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
	Memory at 128000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=32M]
does X.org start if you take some RAM sticks out?
(BTW: you should really get a x86_64 kernel & userspace with 4GB RAM!)

Thanks, for the help. I was specifically requested to put 32bit version on but I will happily go to the 64bit.
