1080p 24Hz on PS3

Hey guys,

I'm sure all of you with PS3s should be aware by now that there is a new firmware update, 2.17, out. Well last night I dled and installed it and today I'm noticing a slight choppiness with my Blu-ray playback. At first I wasn't sure if it was just my eyes but it's very noticeable when pressing select and having the display menu come up. I tried all my BD movies and it was the same with all of them. Long story short I decided to look in the BD/DVD options and noticed that 1080p 24Hz was set to automatic. Disabling this seemed to have fixed the problem and everything is smooth now. I know I haven't touched any of the playback settings before and everything was fine so it has me thinking that it's the firmware update that did this since BDs looked perfect on my TV prior to the update.

Anyone else have this issue? Is there some type of benefit to having 24Hz enabled?

good question. I'll have to check that out since I have not watched any BDs since the firmware update.

1080p 24Hz had been around last few firmware updates. It wasn't new with 2.17. It was set to automatic long ago for me but my HDTV doesn't support that feature so it's disabled.

Maybe it's a new bug?

im not sure but i could have swore that the 24mhz thingy came as an option on my TV not my PS3, could be wrong but i never noticed it till i got my new TV.
i have a 52" Sony BRAVIA XBR 1080p LCD with 120Hz
and ya i can tell a big differnce when 24mhz is enable, not sure if its cause of my TV but WOW! man thats all i can say about it.

Native 24p support is the best for viewing blu-ray movies; otherwise it has to speed up the frames to match the refresh rate of the TV(3:2 pulldown). So the setting should be set to on(or automatic) for those with 24p native support(note that there's a difference between accepting a 24Hz signal and displaying it correctly; many TVs accept a 24Hz signal but have to perform the pulldown themselves in order to display it correctly), and disabled for everyone else(this way the ps3 performs the pulldown).

This 24Hz thing is really confusing...

I'll soon be ordering a Samsung LCD HDTV (Euro models M87 Series or F86 Series), to hook up the PS3.
Does anyone knows if these Samsung models accept (and display correctly) 24Hz through PS3's Blu-Ray playback?

They supposedly both support it.

Have a read through the FAQ for the M87 here. Pretty sure the newer F86 does too.

If your considering the M87 price range, you should look towards the Sony Bravia 40V3000. It has a superior build quality compared to the M87 and supports 1080p /24p 101% as it's listed as a key feature for the set. You never know what your going to get with the M87, there are various different panels that they use and reports of banding issues, scart probs etc

Can't comment on the F86 although from what I have read in those forums, alot of owners are still experiencing banding issues and for that price range it might be worth considering the Toshiba Z series.
