Classic rendering problem: Krunner
David couldn't describe better the lack of performance i see as well. Although i don't know what graphics card he has, Aaron says it's a driver's problem.

I have noticed major improvement in performance of kde4, as far as it concerns moving windows around, scrolling pages etc, when i kill plasma. Execute killall plasma and try moving windows around or launching applications. In my pc it is faster. Can anyone confirm this?

At least you can quit it normally:
#kquitapp plasma

Currently I'm on intel machine with integrated graphics - doing that doesn't improve anything - graphics is already fluid here.

because plasma is the part that needs the xrender stuff that nvidia is unable to do right.

Here at home I have athlon64 2800+ (1.5 GB ram, 7600gt) - so an ancient machine, but doing it job great for my needs.
With latest 180.x drivers the situation improved a lot, but the problem described here was not due to plasma, because I put an older radeon 9250SE instead of 7600gt for testing and everything was much better concernig graphic operations under kde 4.x.

At work I got a dual pentiumD with some intel 9xx integrated graphics and it works like it should from first day of kde 4.x usage.
