Cool EVGA 9800GX2 QUAD SLI + 790i Ultra SLI

What a glorious sight

Such exciting hardware this time around, Quad SLI AFR is awesome, and the 790i is really an incredible motherboard. Just like 3-way SLI, to see the full benefit of Quad SLI, you really need a CPU that is capable of harnessing the power. My 3DMark06 score did not increase very much, further proof of the CPU bottleneck that you run into with such powerful hardware.

I am really impressed with the motherboard, comparing to my 680i. On the 680i SLI 4.4GHz was... sometimes stable, with the 790i, 4.5GHz is stable all day long. I have not run into a single issue or hiccup, currently running the P03 BIOS. Max FSB was just a hair under 2GHz. 1600MHz DDR3 means I can run my FSB/Mem at a 1:1 ratio.

Only benchmark I have at the moment is Crysis:

Crysis
1920x1200 Very High Settings
4xAA/16xAF (forced in control panel)
8800 Ultra 3-Way SLI= 20.65FPS
9800GX2 Quad SLI= 30.26FPS

Gears of War at 1920x1200 16x/16x was a solid 62FPS, COD4 was over 60FPS at 1920x1200 16x/16x, it will be really interesting how the upcoming DX10 titles like Assassins Creed and Clear Sky will run.

Some more pics

What memory are you running in that ?

Waiting on motherboard, memory, 64 gig SSD from OCZ and Phase from Jin.

What are temp likes, do you think a WC setup is needed for cards and mobo ?

G.Skill 1600MHz 4GB (2x2GB)

I can run easily at 1640MHz, I have not tried to run any higher yet though...

Ok good, I was going to order the OCZ

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227286

No motherboards are out yet

So EVGA or Striker Extreme, that is the question now.

very nice system jakup, but what I see in the numbers is that IF you could sli 4 8800ultras the difference would only be a few fps. These cards are at best a small tweak better than current cards, defiantly not "next gen" material.

Surely, but you can't run 4x8800Ultras

Also they have all the features that the 8800GT brought to the table like the PureVideo HD improvements, and enhanced texture compression.

I said IF, cause I'm thinking about per card performance for the rest of us wanting 1 card

Edit crunched the numbers

30fps / 4 cards = 7.5fps per card
20fps / 3 cards = 6.7fps per card

so this generation brought a whopping .8 extra fps per card in crysis.

another way to put it,

take the 20fps and add 6.7fps to total 4 cards.

4 8800ultras would be = 26.7fps
quad 9800gx2 = 30fps

The 9800 series on paper are the worst series in many years.

Dude, thats a nice rig and more money than I would ever drop into a system. But Nvidia boards are just garbage. The 690 wasn't stable because they are crap boards man. The new one might be better, but Intel chipsets are the epitome of stability.
