Default New to Ubuntu need help with installing nvidia drivers

I have an Nvidia 6600gt.
I am using Ubuntu 7.10 on a P4

I downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12.pkg1.run from Nvidia.com

I followed the instructions and I am typing sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12.pkg1.run in the terminal but it just keeps saying sh: Can't open NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12.pkg1.run

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

1) Do _not_ install the nvidia driver by hand in ubuntu.
Just don't. It will give you lots of problems.

Ubuntu has a package managment and a manager
for restricted drivers.

2) if you really want to, and have good reasons,
and agree that some people wont give you any support
if it breaks because you where warned:

read the sticky posts, there are instructions
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490

3) in your case probably the file is not executable.
chmod +x will solve this.
Or the file is broken.

Or you could use the third party program Envy and let it do all the work.

I have used it on all 3 of my Unbuntu Gutsy machines and it worked!

I have tried to re download the driver, and when I try to do automatic install it just keeps on saying:

Could not open the file /home/eric/Desktop/NVIDI…Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run using the Unicode (UTF-8) character coding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a different character coding from the menu and try again.

It would also not allow me to install Envy.
Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: debhelper

I am noticing that I am having trouble installing a lot of things. I also can't get the Adobe flash plug in installed.

This is a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.10 and I am trying to figure out if it is just me or if I am having other issues.

Apparently you have not installed the repositories;

This guide is VERY helpful in installing all kinds of programs and it starts you out by installing the repositories.
Use terminal and copy and paste the command lines into it. Will get you into the ballgame quickly!
