Default XV overlay on 6200 TC

I got a 6200 TC based video card and now I have no control over brightness and other features in the mplayer video equalizer.
From what I understand this is because the hardware overlay is not implemented for my card. Is this right ? and if so is the only solution switching to the OpenGL or other renderer ? Won't that cause a performance penalty ?

Definitely YES, sadly overlay seems to be gone on recent boards, even if windows report it as available (WTF!?).
By the way, you've 3 choices:
The first is to use gl output; i've experimented with various settings and found that the fastest method is to use:
Code:
-vo gl:yuv=4
...but i'm on 7900GS, so your results may vary, check man mplayer for a list of options regarding gl video output.

The second is to use software video equalizer:
(-vf eq or -vf eq2) which enables realtime adjustments too.

The third one (probably the lighter) is to change X server video settings, nvidia-settings program let you do that, but it will change the entire desktop colors and the video too (because overlay is not used).
