Default Installer 171.06 and ram

Hi to all,

I tried to install the last version of nvidia driver (171.06) hoping thet my problem can find a solution: my xorg crashes when i use two ram banks (total 3 GB: 2 GB + 1 GB). I had not this problem with the kernel 2.6.18-6 and the nvidia driver 1.0.8776: it was perfectly able to manage the entire ram.

Is there a solution to this issue? I'm using only one ram bank (2 GB) a t the moment, but i would like to use both one.

Thanks to all

hmm, when x crashes... can you still ssh the machine or open a vt? because we need a nvidia-bug-report.log right after the _crash_...

sorry, i don't know how i can use the nvidia bug report, but i can post the xorg.log file at the following link. I think thet the problem is how memory is allocated.

here the link:

http://paste.debian.net/51903

Thanks for your attention

I forgot to to say thet xserver doesn't start when i boot the system (xorg crash). When xdm should have to start the system reboots itself.

hmm, just run nvidia-bug-report.sh (as root) and then you should see a nvidia-bug-report.log in the same directory...

Anyway, can disable XDM, then boot with 4GB and run nvidia-bug-report.sh?

hmm, why is the dmesg missing? this is actually the most interesting part, because _their_ you can see if the kernel has remapped anything...

- check if there's a new BIOS for your board.
- try different kernel-boot-parameters like pci=conf1 or pci=conf2 or nommconf, ...

ooh... so the problem is due to the kernel version!!

indeed with the 2.6.18-amd64 i haven't got any problem.

the question is: does the 2.6.24 cause the same troubles ?

I forgot dmesg... I updated bios to latest version but i didn't solve the problem.

With regard to different setting of parameters i can try.

I solve the problem re-installing kernel 2.6.18-6-amd64... and using the latest version of nvidia driver (171.06)... So it was not due to the driver

When kernel will correctly manage ram memory i will update it.

Thanks to all for support
