Thumbs up Metamodes toggling, shortcut and control panel issue.

I have two physical displays, sometimes use only the one, sometimes both.
To that effect, I have set up two metamodes:

1. DFP-0: 1280x1024_75 +0+0, DFP-1: 1280x1024_75 +1280+0;
2. DFP-0: 1280x1024_75 +0+0, DFP-1: NULL;

I have to start up with the dual display as the first (default) mode, otherwise I will get the combined bounding box (i.e. a single 1280x1024 display scrollable on 2560x1024 canvas). I can live with that, but...

1. Using the shortcut to toggle (CTRL & ALT & NUM+/NUM-) works, except when going from dual to single, it retains the combined bounding box.

2. When using the Nvidia control panel to toggle metamode from dual to single, I get the single display just fine, with no bounding box problem, but then the keyboard shortcut to toggle back to dual display no longer works.
(The shortcut always work from dual view to single, no matter how I change into it.)

So two questions:
1. Why do I get the combined bounding box when toggling from dual to single with the shortcut, but do not have that problem when shifting from dual to single with the cp? What does the cp do extra and can I get the toggle shortcut to replicate that behavior?

2. Why does the shortcut stop working after having used the cp to shift from dual to single display?

What I really just want is the shortcut to work like the cp, i.e. without the bounding box issue!

This has been bugging me for a while, so it would be really nice if someone can come up with an idea or even - dare I hope - a solution for me.

Cheers, and thanks in advance!

Using: Fedora 8, KDE, kernel, Nvidia driver 169.12
2 x Samsung 204B, Nvidia Quatro FX1000.
