Default Newbie Trying to install

So I'm a newbie running Ubuntu. I'm trying to install the drivers so I can play Counterstrike:Source through Crossovers. I've downloaded "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run" and double clicked it which opens up image viewer, I know thats not right. So I try to install them through synaptic but that didn't work either. (I installed and uninstalled all the different nvidia-glx patches, none changed my error message that I didn't have the right drivers installed") What program should I use to open "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run"? Sorry I'm really new to Linux.

Installing the nvidia-glx-new package may be easier. Depending on the version of Ubuntu you're using, it may not be the 169.xx driver, but 100.xx instead. If nvidia-glx-new isn't 169.xx and you need it to support your card, you'll need to open up an xterm/rxvt/gnome term and change to the directory where the .run file is located, then execute it as root -
Quote:
bash$ su -
(enter password)
bash# cd /path/to/nvidia.run/file
bash# chmod 755 NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run
bash# ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run
After it's installed, you'll need to change your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to use Driver "nvidia" instead of Driver "nv" or perhaps "vesa". A gui text editor may be easier for you to use, again you'll need to be root to edit this.

Here is what I did.

I downloaded and installed envy:

http://albertomilone.com/ubuntu/nvid...buntu9_all.deb

Then just run it, sit back and drink your coffee.
