Question Nvidia drivers for Linux 9

I am unable to start X due I believe to incompatibilities between the kernel: 2.4.20-8smp and the newest drivers.

I'm running on dual Athlon CPUs, with a GeForce4

I have been unable to install the 4191 drivers.

I have downloaded and installed the 4349 drivers from
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-4349/
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4349.tar.gz
and
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4349.tar.gz

However X does not start, for reasons above.
I have attached the log of the output of the installation commands as well as my XFree86.0.log file, and XF86Config file.

Sorry if this is a newbie question- Please help if you know what needs to be done to get X up and running again. Will I have to wait for the newest drivers? Will I have do reinstall an older kernel?

Thanks.

p.s. my files are not being attached. I'll try a couple times in this thread.

Code:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
This is your problem. From your nvidia-installer log, it looks like you built the driver while booted into the 2.4.20-8 kernel, not the 2.4.20-8smp kernel. Is this correct? If so, you need to reboot to the 2.4.20-8smp kernel and reinstall the driver.

Also, you should check out 1.0-4363 instead of 1.0-4349.

Thanks Andy,
Re. the 2.4.20-8 kernal vs. the 2.4.20-8smp kernel, I suppose that's correct, but I know I tried both.

Downloading the 1.0-4363 drivers and running the install program, I am still unable to start X but I think the problem may be in my XF86Config file. I don't want to look too stupid so I'll try to fix it- if I get stuck I'll reply to this thread if that's OK.

Thanks again.

Make sure the installed sources are configured for the running kernel. Binary distros are notorious for including the wrong sources or no sources, or even sources set up for the stock/default kernel, instead of the one that is running.

Thanks- X is looking good now. I've since updated the kernel to 2.4.20-9smp and all I had to do was rerun the 1.0-4363 install program (when booted into the new kernel).
