Default Projector in clone mode under Linux

Hello,

I have some troubles to make my projector working... I tried with nvidia-settings and by modifying xorg.conf manually, but got no satisfactory results, moreover, all information that I've found were quite outdated, so this is why I am here!

I'm using Gentoo Linux, here are my settings
[*] nvidia-drivers-169.12
[*] nvidia-settings-169.07
[*] xorg-server-1.4.0.90-r3 (native screen resolution is 1920x1200)
[*] my make.conf contains VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia vesa fbdev" and the nvidia and xinerama use flag are set.

When I connect a projector to my laptop, I got awful resolutions on the beamer (either 640x480 or even worse or just a part of my screen).
But If I start my computer with the beamer connected, I got a correct screen resolution on the beamer, but have no display at all on my laptop.

What I want is that when I connect a beamer on my laptop, I got correct resolutions on both screens, with the screen "cloned".

I look forward to reading your answers!
Thank you very much.

Best,

devrandom

Please provide a nvidia bug report
(or better: two of them, one with the beamer
connected at startup and one without)

Then the output of xrandr and the
EDID provided by the beamer.

This has been a long-time issue (albeit caused by external projectors/monitors, not the nVidia driver itself). The easiest way would be forcing X to recognize 2 monitors at boot-time, assuming we always run in 'Clone' mode. You may extract relevant session in the xorg.conf generator here:

http://www.sorgonet.com/linux/nv-online/

Use 'TwinView', set the desired resolution and add these lines into your /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Quote:
Option "Twinview" "TRUE"
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "Clone"
Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "0"
Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "0"
Option "MetaModes" "800x600 , 800x600"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT , CRT"
Modify those accordingly and restart X, it should work. The problem is you may experience undesired behaviors with a few applications that depend on resolution (e.g. games).

I have no clue why nvidia-settings doesn't allow forcing external monitor into a particular mode, given that the user has been warned.

Thank you for your replies.
In fact, I already tried the trick f1f0 suggests, but I only got a 1024x768 screen resolution on my laptop (but the resolution on the projector was good)... (the native resolution of my laptop's screen is 1920x1200).
Regarding the bug report, the problem is that I don't own my own projector, but I often have to do presentations to students (differents rooms, differents projectors), and hence, it is difficult to provide the EDID...

Do you know if Nvidia is planning to make life easier to user who have to deal with many different projectors? I heard ati did it pretty well... Thank you.

I only hope they allow forcing any resolution/refresh rate for unknown display devices, however dangerous that is, it's a nice solution for many devices.
