Should I just ship this HSF back to NewEgg and order a Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme?

I just snagged this Ultima 90
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=22356
- Beats the heck out of my Big Typhoon VX for looks and much less weight hanging off the mobo.

Currently using a Zalman 92mm fan til I find something better. Max 40c with Orthos small FFTs and fan set to low.

So i think I'll see some improvement with a better fan also.

the problem is.. i don't want to be left without a computer. I might just order the 120 Ultra Extreme and just basically keep the Typhoon as backup....

How big of an improvement will the Thermalright Ultra Extreme be?

I have had two silenx fan 120mm died on me... Although it happened right there with my harddrives so I don't know if it was because of that.

My other two fans filled with dust are still working.

Well, in all seriousness, this aging rig is running Ubuntu 8.04 with all the fancy GUI visual enhancements enabled almost as fast as my FX-60 with 4GB of RAM and dual 8800GTS 640MB rig ran Vista x64 and Aero in all it's glory. I'm actually quite proud of this setup.

So much so that once I get my Quad-core Intel rig assembled, this new Phenom-based rig will become my secondary and it'll be running just the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 8.04. I absolutely love this operating system. Almost as much as Windows. Just gotta' figure out how to get my .WMA's and DVDs to play on it. Aside from that, this OS is hands down the best Linux distro I've used yet. I highly recommend it to EVERYBODY!!!

I have a SilenX and I think its pretty overrated. Not a bad fan by any means, but it doesn't really seem significantly different than my Antec Tricool fans as far as volume or air flow. I'm guessing the high CFM and low db ratings are taken from the absolutely highest and absolute lowest speeds the fan can run at and they just advertise it so that it seems like you get them both at the same time.

Also, mine makes a clicking sound once in a while during and after a heavy system load. I can't tell if the fins are touching something or if its the motor.

I'd recommend one (if it doesn't click), but I highly highly doubt that the advertised volume and air flow are even close to the truth.

Happened to me. It's probably both because the motor is causing the whole fan to tilt so the fin touches the supporting thingy on fan. That's just my guess because the fan that happened to me was in front stuck between the front mesh and my harddrives. What else could it be if it's perfectly "protected"?
