Hi,
First of all, here are my specs: CPU: AMD64 X2 5600+ Memory: 4x 1GB Kingston Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS with 256MB memory. OS: Ubuntu Linux 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) Okay, this computer is brand new, and everything works perfectly in Windows, so I don't think it's a hardware problem. I installed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.12 driver a few weeks ago when I still had 2GB of RAM. Everything worked back then. But when I installed 2GB RAM extra, my screen went blank right before the graphical login screen would appear. I also don't hear any sounds that I usually hear when the login screen appears. It still works in Windows. So I thought maybe it's a bug in the driver. Can anyone help me please? ![]() |

according to the log you're using the "vesa" driver!
As root, open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf in an editor, look for the line Driver "vesa" and replace "vesa" with "nvidia", then log off and on again. |

There are known problems with using (nearly) 4GB of memory, try to use the search function.

Just to clarify, however: there are no known NVIDIA Linux graphics driver bugs with large memory configurations.

If you struggle with vi, as I do, you could add "linux 3" as an argument to the boot loader. This makes the system bootup to init 3. After that I would run the nvidia-xconfig command and let let it configure your xorg file. Reboot or run startx.

This log file was made with recovery mode bootup. As for the other replies: thanks, I will look into it later when I have more time. ![]() |
