Default System freezing while playing a game in Wine

While playing Red Alert: A Path Beyond with Wine (http://www.apathbeyond.com/), the whole system is freezing periodically in-game for about 10 seconds (e.g. even mouse doesn't move). It makes the game completly unplayable. I'm getting this in X log:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x0000760c, 0x00007780)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x0000c484, 0x0000c96c)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (0, 6, 0x8000, 0x0000daa8, 0x0000daa8)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x0000daa8, 0x000036d8)
If anyone wants to try, set the wine dll override d3d8=native before playing.
