Default Startup problems with 96.43.05

I've upgraded to 96.43.05 on a Toshiba laptop, GF MX420 go, 2.6.23.17. It installs OK, but when I start x, I get the nVidia logo, then the X cursor in the center of the screen, and it just sits there.

The 9639 and 9631 drivers won't even compile, they fail when building the kernel module. The 9643 compiles just fine - they just don't work.

logs attached.

Here is the bug report. I had to zip it because it was too big to attach.
