I had the same problem on my old box running a 7600 gt card. So i guess it's not only the 8000 series.

Well, I just checked out 173.14.05 and the issue is still there.

For those of you who tried the patch, what are your setups? Driver version, card, mythtv version etc

I'm running svn head and have a set of patches that I'm feeding into trac:-

http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/5324

So assuming you're running .21-fixes, there may be something in svn that makes a difference or my particular card/driver combo is key.

Default Re: 169.12 'Blank' screen after deleting/recreating opengl window and context

I tested on two systems:

- AMD phenom quad; gentoo kernel 2.6.24; nv driver 169.09.r1; video card 7900GS; myth svn 17413-fx

- Intel Core2Duo; same kernel; nv driver 169.12; video card 8800 GTS; myth 17395-fx

Both boxes have black screens when switched to opengl (with your patch). Sorry.

The CPU loading is quite higher without opengl, so is there any chance a revised patch could be considered?

Tested the patch on the following without success:

Intel Q9300, gentoo 2.6.24 kernel, nv 169.12, videocard 8600 GT, myth 0.21-fixes 17392.

Have also tried with nv 169.01-r1 and svn 16944 of myth on the same box.

Just realised the problem everyone is having with the patch/hack/workaround - it only works on 173.xxx drivers. I think you're all using 169.xxx versions.

Sorry - forgot that detail which was hidden earlier in the thread.

Finally I’ve got opengl working with 8800GTS but….there is always a but….

To install the latest 173.14.05 I had to get out of the gentoo emerge procedure and install the drivers straight with the nvidia installer. By doing so, I did not apply some gentoo driver patches and I might have introduced some incompatibilities. Also I had to initialize the kernel with “selinux=0” otherwise some API incompatibilities prevented the loading of nvidia module.

About the picture itself…is not the greatest. I’ve just played briefly with some deinterlacers…finally I’ve got yardif going. But the opengl video works only in HD (opengl SD crashes mythtv). Sometimes the pic briefly breaks in the middle horizontally, and on heavy motion is pixelated. In addition there is no preview in the guide, and on some HD channels.the picture has a while line at the bottom.

Some of these are old mythtv problems with opengl, which obviously haven't been fixed even with the latest driver.

Ohh well…nothing is perfect!

I am not sure if I understand:

1. install 173.14.05 driver from Nvidia
2. patch MythTV (which patches? svn or 0.21-fixes?)
3. only works with HD? why?

your description sounds more like a hack than a fix, but I might be wrong.

Beside regular patches, I applied markkendall's patch submitted earlier in the thread, to 0.21 SVN r17413 fixes.

Why SD opengl renderer crashes? Sorry I have no idea...As a matter of fact it did crash occasionally on HD as well.

This opengl renderer is quite unpredictable.

I divided the resolutions, so opengl is applied only to HD. But after some channel switching, myth does not accept opengl anymore and changes automatically to a regular renderer.

Now lets not forget, my box is an NFS mounted diskless system, and may or may not behave entirely like a regular system. In addition the nvidia driver was installed in an "unorthodox" way, which may have created instability.

Just upgraded to nvidia drivers 173.14.05 via the new ebuild in gentoo, and then applied the patch to myth 0.21 fixes. Opengl is working as it should for me now.

Thanks for all the help mark.

Thumbs down Re: 169.12 'Blank' screen after deleting/recreating opengl window and context

I got around trying this setup today:
Mythbuntu Hardy
173.14.05 nvidia driver
patch for fixes in this thread
17416 fixes for mythtv

And nothing is fixed. Still black screen after first view, and random segfaults of mythfrontend.

do you mean all the ones at http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/5324 or the small diff in the text file?
