Question What to expect and how to get the most out of a humble 6200 card?

Hi everyone, I'm new here. Recently my *really* old ATI card died and I replaced it with a GeForce 6200 128MB. Of course it was not a performance-driven upgrade and I do not use my machine for gaming, but I would still like to obtain the best possible performance from my system. Unfortunately, it seems I am not able to do it. Dragging windows leaves a slight trail and the picture inside often "melts" while the background redrawing suffers a little delay; glxgears will not go above 720 FPS @ 1680x1050 and 865 FPS @ 1024x768; 3D applications (including Beryl/Compiz) are not quite smooth... I understand this is a low performance card, but I have a feeling it could do a bit better than this, especially in 2D. I tried playing with several options in xorg.conf, few of them made a difference and it was usually a small but negative one.
So what I am asking for is either confirmation that what I am getting is the best this card can do, or ways to improve, including a "perfect" xorg.conf file and nvidia-settings options.

Feel free to ask any useful information, I can already tell you that:

- I run Gentoo Linux, the latest Xorg and KDE and Nvidia driver version 169.12.
- I get no explicit error messages in Xorg logs and in glxinfo, except from a recurrent one in .xsession-errors:

- I know glxgears is not a reliable benchmark, but I think it can at least be used to compare its results on similar hardware.

Post a Nvidia bug report. In particular scan it for the output of glxinfo - you want to see direct rendering: Yes

I can already tell you that Direct Rendering is on. Puzzingly, I once tried the Mandriva Live CD with 3D Desktop, which seemed to give me a better performance, and it used indirect rendering (AIGLX I think), but I haven't been able to replicate such condition on my system.
