I don't know what you are doing guys, but my 2d is snappy (except one night when, after some excessive flash watching, X turned into a mem hog).

Good to hear that .

@bebar

The same problems here. GF6800

@energyman76b

Nothing. I've got a fresh system. Maybe only some cards are affected, but I don't think so.

Hardware is alright, because it works well under windows, but other options are possible.

for the record:
- default: 2d snappy on a go7400, w/ gnome 2.22's metacity as compositor
- if I change InitialPixmapPlacement to anything but the default, everything insanely crawls except scrolling. if I revert to default and close/reopen the windows everything is fine again.

173.08 finally fixes rendering problems with transparency (see my transparent engine): http://arstechnica.com/articles/cult...ting-gtk.ars/3

So ok, fix speed but I think that the correct rendering we now achieved is a way more important.

EDIT:
not at all, I have some rendering problems too

so you think that something as simple as xmms which stalls continually (at least graphically, sometimes also the audio skips) without the cpu being used and making so my pc pratically less powerfull in this way than my ps2 with linux is a good thing? which can be overlooked if there is some transparency in there?

(opening a tooltip can easily reproduce the stall)

(sometimes i get also worsening performances trough a session with the time going on. to fix this i have to reboot the computer)
(older versions were more powerfull btw)

hm, I found something interessting:

everything is fast, snappy and nice, until I watch a video.

After that, 2d is indeed slow.

SDL based games (wesnoth) are still fast, but text scrolling slows down a lot.

Seems like something becomes confused somewhere.

This is not ok:
root 1615 18.4 4.9 1064404 199420 tty7 RLs+ 12:57 30:27 /usr/bin/X -br -nolisten tcp :0 vt7 -auth /var/run/xauth/A:0-syred2

and it looks worse with htop - up to 40% CPU load doing almost nothing ....

ok, there is something strange going on.

2d is slow. I play a game of ut2004 (which was nice and fast as always), come back to kde - and 2d is fast again.

WTF?
