I have a Nvidia FX 5500 with Ubuntu 8.04 (beta), and it seems almost every opengl application (such as compiz or glxgears, etc...) causes an error and stops working. I had Ubuntu 7+ installed last week and everything worked great.
Strangely, compiz will start up correctly (i.e. wiggly windows and all), but will crash as soon as I drag a window to another desktop, or crash if I enable the Desktop cube. Some of the opengl screensavers won't load at all (they just immediately error), and some load fine. Also, I have tried the nvidia drivers from the repository, and I tried the latest linux driver on your website. Both had the same result. I'm at a loss on what to do next. Please advice. Thanks, -Jonathan |

Here is a screenshot of the actual apport error window that opens up when compiz crashes.

Please attach an nvidia-bug-report.log (gzipped). Note that it's expected behavior for very recent drivers that applications die with SIGILL if your CPU does not support SSE, although this may apparently be fixed in future legacy drivers.

Yep, you're using an original AMD Athlon, which does not support SSE. See, for example, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=104914.

Is there a driver in the NVidia linux archives that I can use that will work with an original AMD Athlon and Ubuntu 8.04? I assume there is an older driver which will work, since Ubuntu 7+ worked fine with this same system.
Thanks, -Jonathan |
