Default Linux Noob: Can't Install Driver for GeForce 7600

I have just installed Ubuntu 7.10 having not used Linux for 20 years.

I can't change my screen resolution to anything better than 1280x1024 at 61Hz. In Wind*ws I can get 1600x1200 at 80Hz.

I assume the problem is that my GeForce 7800 and/or Iiyama HM204DT have not been recognised by the system.

I've tried searching in the fora and FAQs but without success so far. Please point me in the direction of any threads that may help if you know about them: I'm sure I am not the first person with this problem.

I have tried to install nVidia's drivers but the installer complains that I am running X when I don't think I am. Here's what I tried:

1. Boot to Ubuntu login screen.
2. Type CTRL-ALT-F1 (I think) to get a command-line prompt.
3. sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.12-pkg2.run

I get a message along the lines of "You appear to be running X. Quit and try installing again".

Any thoughts gratefully received, but please bear in mind I am basically a complete Linux noob so I need to know what keys to press (or be directed to somewhere that tells me).

Many thanks.

Doubt that.

Do _not_ install the driver by hand. Just don't.

1) use the restricted driver manager or sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new, after configuring the restricted repos in the software management utility (synaptic in ubuntu, adept in kubuntu)

2) or use envy

3) or read http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490

Fair cop :-) I meant not having used Unix for 20 years.

Thanks for your suggestions - I'll have a go.
