Default nvidia performance/lockup issues on linux (ACPI issue?)

i just installed ubuntu gutsy (i had fiesty for a while with NO ISSUES on the same hardware)

i got nvidia-glx-new it says version is 100.14.19+2.6.22.4-14.10 (id imagine part of that is the nvidia driver number)

heres the part in my xorg.conf
Code:
Section "Device"
	Identifier	"nVidia Corporation NV45 [GeForce 6800 GTO]"
	Driver		"nvidia"
	Busid		"PCI:5:0:0"
	Option		"AddARGBVisuals"	"True"
	Option		"AddARGBGLXVisuals"	"True"
	Option		"NoLogo"	"True"
EndSection
sometimes as little as 2-3 times an hour.. but sometimes as often as every 2 minutes (basically nonstop) it starts slowing down

it will lock up for about a second.. then it will run at about 1/3rd the normal speed for 10 seconds or so
then lock up for 10-20 seconds... completely..
then run perfectly fine again.... i can usually see the entire screen flicker/redraw once or twice during this..

i checked the kern.log and found this
Code:
Apr 18 14:43:25 kefka kernel: [  639.726755] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 8, Channel 0000001e
Apr 18 14:43:25 kefka kernel: [  639.731752] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 30,  L1 -> L0
Apr 18 14:43:37 kefka kernel: [  647.749155] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 8, Channel 00000002
Apr 18 14:43:37 kefka kernel: [  647.753934] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 30,  L0 -> L0
Apr 18 14:43:41 kefka kernel: [  655.764633] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 4, Ch 00000002 SC 00000001 M 00000a04 Data 04000000
Apr 18 14:43:49 kefka kernel: [  663.753982] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 8, Channel 00000002
Apr 18 14:44:01 kefka kernel: [  675.761581] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 8, Channel 00000002
Apr 18 14:44:09 kefka kernel: [  683.771961] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 8, Channel 0000001e
Apr 18 14:44:21 kefka kernel: [  691.790362] NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 8, Channel 00000002
i dont know what it means.. i did a search for NVRM Xid and found dozens of different threads about bugs. most were old, i cant tell if its talking about the same issue or different issues..

what do i do?
whats causing this?

Default Re: nvidia performance/lockup issues on linux

i found this is my X logs

Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)

i attached 2 bug report logs
one is from my old fiesty install that worked fine for like a year easy (worked fine before that too)

one is the new log from the setup that keeps overheating, and locking up for about 30 seconds ( earlier locked up for 2 minutes before recovering..)

im wondering if its cause of this ACPI stuff. the old logs show it worked fine. the new ones show it didnt

i checked, the file its looking for is there but for some reason ACPI isnt working?
