Default patching for 2.6.25: not in gzip format

I tried patching the .run files for x86_64 driver versions 169.12, 171.06 and 96.43.05 using the --apply-patch arg and the correct diff.txt file. They all happily generate a *custom.run but running it gives:

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-96.43.05-pkg2-custom.run -x

Creating directory NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-96.43.05-pkg2-custom

Verifying archive integrity... OK

Uncompressing NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86_64 96.43.05/src/nvidia/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-96.43.05-pkg2-custom

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format

The directory *custom is created but it is empty
This is fedora8
Any ideas?
Thank you
