well my Vista seems to be running A LOT smoother after installing SP1 despite a lot of benchies I saw showing no difference. Game load times seem to have dropped dramatically.

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd post a couple of questions I had in here about Vista. I've actually had Vista Ultimate since its release, but I've only had it installed a couple of times. I recently had it on my system but I ended up switching back to XP for a couple of reasons. However now I'm thinking of switching back.

The only issues I have with Vista are sort of uncommon, one involving my monitor and the other involving the way it handles bilinear filtering on console emulation programs. The issues were minor but fairly annoying, and from a gaming standpoint the OS doesn't seem to offer anything particularly compelling to offset the issues I had. DirectX 10 doesn't interest me at the moment.

One thing I did notice in Vista's favor was the performance of my sound card. This was kind of weird too - I had an Audigy 2 ZS card (which I've had for a long time) and the drivers in Vista were absolute crap. Everything sounded hollow and muted. I decided to get a new sound card and went with this Auzen Prelude 7.1, and I was amazed at how good it sounded (in Vista). Now I'm back to an XP install, got the drivers set up, and strangely enough it seems as though the sound is actually a bit worse - the highs don't sound as clear and there is a more "scratchy" sound to some of my games that didn't exist in Vista.

A few of my older games had issues but I don't really play them a whole lot anymore. For those of you veterans out there, is there anything to my perception that Vista is better for sound in general, and would it be worth sticking with it for now? By the way, I have a 4GB RAM kit sitting around in case I want to reinstall, otherwise I'm gonna return it.

This is not entirely true. I have Vista 64 along with an XFI Extreme gamer card and have access to all of its functions (hardware acceleration). The Alchemy works great to and is not in the least bit all that complicated to work, you just set up a profile for your game and your done.

However you do have to get the special CD from Creative in order to get full use of your XFI sound card if your using Vista. I got lucky and downloaded the CD that someone had ripped and then burned it to my own CD. LOL.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I tried XP again with my XFI and though it sounded good it was not as good as it sounds under Vista. Vista supposedly handles the sound differently than XP and it is indeed supposed to sound better when using Vista.

Keep your 4 gigs of ram and stick with Vista 64, its the way to go.

Same here, I would never go back to XP now. Vista looks so nice and my games are flying.

Damn it, well I better reinstall Vista then. Anyone know if it'll have activation issues since I just installed and activated it last week?

shouldn't be a problem, if no hardware changed.
