Default ubuntu server kernel misidentified as xen?

I'm trying to install the 169.12 driver (from nvidia's .run file). The kernel I am using is from Ubuntu 8.04, the "2.6.24-16-server" kernel. The installer refuses to install into this kernel: it reports
Code:
The kernel you are installing for is a xen kernel.
This doesn't make much sense to me: I don't think ubuntu's server kernel is a xen kernel. Am I mistaken, or is this a bug?

Please attach the corresponding /var/log/nvidia-installer.log file.

Here it is.

As additional info: this problem occurred with the 32-bit kernel. I just tried with the 64-bit kernel (on a different machine) and did not have the same problem: the installer did not complain.

The log file you attached does not capture the problem. Please attach one that does.

I have the same issue. I would like to use the server kernel in order to use my 4 GB of RAM; the desktop kernels always see only 2GB. Building my own kernal under Kubuntu 7.10 worked but then I couldn't compile the nvidia driver. The server kernel worked well for me under 7.10

Now with 8.04 I get the same error code

...
-> Performing Xen check.
ERROR: The kernel you are installing for is a Xen kernel!

The NVIDIA driver does not currently work on Xen kernels. If
you are using a stock distribution kernel, please install
a variant of this kernel without Xen support; if this is a
custom kernel, please install a standard Linux kernel. Then
try installing the NVIDIA kernel module again.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

...

So I need to run again the desktop kernel with the 2 GB of RAM problem.

Please NVIDIA: try to find a solution. And many thanks that you support LINUX so well !

In order to help isolate the problem, it might help if you extracted the .run package using the --extract-only command line option, changed to ./usr/src/nv under the directory created, edited the conftest.sh script and made this change in the test_xen() function:
...
#error CONFIG_XEN defined!
#endif
" > conftest$$.c

- $CC $CFLAGS -c conftest$$.c > /dev/null 2>&1
+ $CC $CFLAGS -c conftest$$.c
rm -f conftest$$.c
...
Then repeat the installation attempt and attach the new /var/log/nvidia-installer.log file.

I have exactly the same problem. I did the change in conftest.sh as described above. See log file attached.

Running server kernel in ubuntu 7.10 works fine with nvidia drivers. Like Christian1967 I have to use server kernel due to 4 GB of RAM. In /boot/config-2.6.24-16-server I found CONFIG_XEN=y.

The compile test isn't failing, the above suggests that you are in fact building against a Xen kernel. What does ../include/linux/autoconf.h look like?

...
#define CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_SHPC_MODULE 1
#define CONFIG_XEN 1
#define CONFIG_DVB_TUA6100_MODULE 1
...
Judging from the above, you will need to get in touch with the Ubuntu package maintainer.

Thumbs up Re: ubuntu server kernel misidentified as xen?

Thanks for the quick support. I've opened a bug report here:
