BUT, they ARE slower than Intel 9 times out of 10. In some cases its significant, in others it isn't. If a user isn't too picky about framerate, they will probably never notice.

But at the same time, why buy something that's slower? Even if you won't notice the difference, its just a bad decision. These X3 CPUs should be pretty good for people wanting a cheap encoding\number crunching machine, but for anyone else there isn't any good reason to go with one over a dual core. In fact, according to this, even a cheap $140 Intel Dual core is extremely close to a $150 Phenom X3 in encoding:
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...spx?i=3293&p=7

So really, it doesn't seem like this chip is going to do much for them other than allow them to save some money that they would normally lose on Quads with a bad core. OEMs will probably eat these up since they are so cheap.
Precisely. AMD *needs* to cut their prices to having any form of an advantage. Intel's recent price-cut was massive, I really do question if AMD can afford to lower their prices enough to remain competitive. How much does it cost them to produce a single CPU? Can they honestly afford to lower their prices any? I really do hope so.

The X2 and X3 chips are priced at the same price, so instead of getting the X2, you can get an X3 at the same price effectively giving you a extra core for no extra money.
Upgrade to a Quad core. Being "different" in this case is being stupid. Intel has a better product line both performance-wise AND price to performance.

I still haven't forgiven you for those jeans yet btw

For the record CaptN, I've been a "geek" since before most anyone on this site. You guys get defensive over a BAD COMPANY. This has nothing to do with me "picking on geeks". This has to do with I think its sad and pathetic people actually DEFEND a company that clearly isn't competitive in the market today. When AMD is back on ball and actually producing parts that have REAL results, then you won't hear anything bad from me. AMD really hasn't released one good product in 2 years. Every single product they release, they push out "rumors" of it going to be the best thing since sliced bread. It ends up being absolute garbage, every single time.

AMD doesn't perform, so I put them down. So what. I get directly insulted by members here because I insult a FAILING company. If you don't like what I say, don't read it. I'm not insulting anyone here. I'm insulting a worthless company. I'm sorry you all take offense to that, but thats sad.

I'm pretty sure every chip maker practices this is one way or another. You don't really think Nvidia makes 1,000,000 GTX chips and then throws away the 60% of them away that don't meat their QC standards do you? Cut a few pipes, label it as a GTS and then "sell it to the market."

I never said I wanted AMD to fail. Where did I state that? What I am stating is they are producing crummy products and need to get their act together. Thats it and thats all. Everyone assumes by me saying a bad company is bad, that I want them to go under. Entirely not true. I want them to succeed. They just arent. Anyone is a fool to believe they are doing anything otherwise.

AND BTW, comparing a small amount of cache disabled on a chip is completely different then disabling an entire CPU core. It looks really bad on the image of the company. Sorry if you fanboi's can't understand that.

Heres the thing, why not? They're offering them at about the same price as the X2's. Why not phase out the X2's with X3's, you get the extra core and its not costing you any extra money. Its like theyre giving you a gift.
Problem is, this triplecore is (much) slower even when compared to Intel dualcore. XBitLabs even gave up comparing AMD recent tri/quad crap to Intel quadcores... AMD X4 cannot beat Intel Ex00. Very sad

And 100W higher power consumption is a sick joke:

Bit I still think launching Phenom X3 is a great marketing idea. For many people 3 (slow and power hungry AMD) cores is better than 2 (fast Intel) cores. They will find their market easily.

--

There is one good AMD CPU - very cheap Athlon X2 4x50+ EE, combined with 780G AMD chipset (decent enough integrated GPU for Vista Aero). That is really good office platform. But X3/X4 CPUs are crap, all enthusiasts buy Intel dual/quad-cores.

Exactly. I think this thread here clearly shows the blind idiocy following people have towards AMD. Foolish AMD fanboi's will be flocking by the dozens(all thats left) to buy these three core AMD's that are "faster and cheaper" than Intel's Dual Core offering.

It might be a good marketing idea for catering towards fools, but for anyone who knows anything, we look at this marketing idea as pawning off low quality parts on your customers for an unfair price.

This move by AMD really lowers their image as a respected company who produces quality parts. Then again, they lost that years ago.

AMD/ATI arn't a bad company. They're a company trying to do their best with the very limited funds they have available. IMO, considering their current situation they're doing remarkably well. They're producing products that are not too far behind the competition with only a fraction of the funds to develope them.

Quite frankly, I, and probably many others, are getting tired of your incoherent bad-mouthing of this company. If you don't like their products, don't buy them. It's that simple. Until you have something intelligent/helpful to say, you should keep your opinions to yourself because no-one wants to read this BS. You're just making yourself look a tool.

I know right?! This Tygerwoody guy keeps voicing his opinion! He's crazy. He must think this is an internet forum or something.
