Hmmm, sounds like I need to move from 180.48 to 180.60 then!

There still seems to be some shimmering issues going around in random locations. Better than originally, but it still needs lots of improvements. Celondim especially, is suffering from lots of bugs. Disappearing shadows, shimmering, shadows that should not be there etc.

I hope the next drivers will change things to the better.

I decided to give the drivers that came with my card a try. They are 177.42. So far all the dx10 shadows around Evendim look great and AA is working without locking me up.

BTW - I tried 180.70 and the shadows were still messed up and I locked when I zoned with AA on.

177.42 looks like a keeper for now. Back to Middle Earth!!

How's your 260+ comparing to the 4870 so far?

I had a 4870x2 and the framerates overall were showing higher but my gtx260 seems less jerky?

Also, the grass didn't move in the wind on the 4870x2?!?!?! At first when I saw that effect on the GTX260 I thought something was messed up and the ground was shimmering, then I noticed that the grass was actually moving in the wind and I was like WHOA!

Also, textures in the distance would flicker on the 4870x2, haven't seen that on the gtx260.

So overall, besides the messed up 180 series drivers, I'm liking the gtx260 better. Considering the 4870x2 was a $550 card and this card cost me a little under $150, that is VERY amazing to me!!!!!

I have a 4870 and the jerkiness you are describing is actually frame skipping which is an issue with this card in many games. I resolved it by capping the framerate in the user config file and it now runs smoothly with DX10 maxed x4AA and x16AF vsynch and tripple buffering enabled. I do get a slight shimmer in the shadows but it is not an issue for me. Before I capped the framerate I was getting between 70 to 80 FPS and the only area that the frame rate takes hit is in the Old Forest. I also get huge framerate drops whenever a rune-keeper comes on screen and from what I have read appears to be a driver issue. That means I can't group with Rune-keepers unless I play at 10FPS. I regret not going for the GTX260 as the nVidia drivers are far more stable than those of Ati plus the card overclocks like a demon.

Guys I have been getting mad with LOTRO, I could play for hours with no crashes, or could have full crashes within minutes, specially inside Moria. I rolled back to previous drivers, used the latest Catalyst hotfix, tried DX9, and still were getting crashes.

Until I found out that graphics drivers were perfectly. There is an issue with the Sound Blaster X-Fi and LOTRO (there are threads in both american and european LOTRO forums about it), if you enable OpenAL hardware acceleration under Windows Vista the game will crash with BSOD sooner or later. After going to motherboard sound crashes are gone and I'm enjoying again long DX10 gaming sessions with 8xAA with no crashes at all.

I have installed 3D SoundBack from Realtek (similar to Alchemy, but for Realtek chipsets), that program makes LOTRO believe DirectSound3D is available so I don't lose 5.1 support. Using my motherboard realtime DTS enconding I don't miss the X-Fi at all, 3D sound works great and the crashes have finally gone away. I'm really enjoying the game now.

I have X-Fi and have had no problems so far - I have not been to the Mines yet.

I dumped my X-Fi about a month ago and the motherboard sound is just fine! I don't even notice the lost of the X-Fi. Under Vista the X-Fi is no better and with buggy drivers in fact worse than onboard sound.

Too bad, I really like my X-Fi under XP, but it is a crap product under Vista...

I am amazed that one company can consistently produce poor drivers. I have only been running Vista for 2 weeks and the first sign of an X-Fi glitch and I will also be dumping my card. I do not think I will ever get a dedicated sound card again.

What about the zonar(sp) sound cards from Asus? I've been using the onboard sound since I switched to vista.
