Default Z-5500 or Creative S750?

Okay as some of you know......

I was a dumb schitt and purchased a set of Z-5500 speakers to replace my Creative G500 speakers.

It now appears that it is an INCREDIBLY dumb thing to do, and I apologise on behalf of humanity.

The prob is that I have just paid $450 (thats trans from euros ).

Is it worth me returning them and buying the Creative S750 instead for $520?

Would this be a better option to go along?

Im moderately commited to getting rid of my G500 now that ive spent so much time worrying over them, unless someone can convince me that one of the above 2 will provide a nice improvement on a X-fi Xtrememusic.

Thank you very much. THe only thing that may be worth considering is the new XFI 2 that is coming out that has optical ports on it with DDL. Will this make the Z-5500 sound better?

Sorry for being such a nag, but $450 is a fair bit for me, being young and all and I would hate all that beer money to go to waste.

thanks again

DDL won't really sound any better than analog sound on an X-Fi.

I've never heard Gigaworks speakers but the Z-5500 shouldn't be too far off (for better or worse) quality wise, and they are definitely more powerful and have a lot more options if you ever hook up a game console or dvd player.

I don't see why the Z-5500 was such a bad idea...? Unless you just don't like the sound of them.

Its just that, from what ive read, there is no sound difference between the z-5500 and the G500. In fact some people are even saying the G500 are better speakers.

Hence the reason why im slightly buggered of at paying $450 for apparently nothing. ^^

Damn, I was sorta hoping Optical would change the way I heard things but it looks not

Digital is probably a tiny bit cleaner and it probably has less background noise, but I've heard a system running DDL on optical from an Auzentech Xplosion and it didn't sound any different than the same system running on analog to me.

Chances are, anyone who doesn't have a $7000 sound system isn't going to notice the difference between analog and digital sound. Its more of a convenience\compatibility thing for most.

In your situation, if you aren't having any problems with your G500 and you don't have money to burn, stick with your G500. The Z5500 is a great set of speakers, but I can't imagine that the difference is worth $450. An X-Fi Xtrememusic with a nice set of analog speakers like the G500 is going to be great for a very long time. Put that money toward a GTX 280.

IS 7.1 gaming any better than 5.1? I've always been curious. I thought about the S750s, but they are still close to $1000 here. ::

With digital connection it almost doesn't matter what kind of soundcard you have.
Using for example Prelude will do you nearly no good because none of the high end components will be used and end result will be identical to the cheapest X-Fi.
It all falls down to how good speakers are (and DACs/OPA-AMPs in it). Analog on the other hand is a different beast. Here, everything falls down on both, how good soundcard is and also speakers.

Im semi curious as well.

I use the speakers in a fairly small room. (4 metres wide, 4 meters long) so hopefully the Z-5500 will fill it with sound well. The G500 were up to the task fairly easily so hopefully so will these

It's a little better in FPS games cos you can pin-point the enemy a little more accurately than with 5.1. I've not really missed 7.1 since going 5.1 though.

But you need perfect speakers placement, otherwise you haven't really done anything.
The missing speakers can usually be replaced with HRTF algorithms (like CMSS-3D on CL X-Fi cards and A3D algorithm on former Aureal Vortex cards).

Again, the Z-5500 are more powerful than the G500. Anything the G500 can do, the Z-5500 can do.

But since you were happy with the G500 and the Z5500 are ridiculously expensive, I'd say return them and put the money toward something you'll get more out of.

BTW, welcome back SOAD.
