Bought the game through EA download. So far I like it. Gotta get used to the squad interface, I'm still getting my ass kicked while trying to figure it out. Game runs nice and smooth and looks great. Some of the outdoor scenes and battles reminds me a little of Unreal 2.

Right now I'm not too crazy about no 5.1 sound support if you have any sound card other than the Xfi. Dunno what they were thinking with that (or if it was just a mistake). Still looking for a workaround (running an Audigy 2 on XP Pro) or a patch to fix it. Having a game that looks and plays as well as this one, and then getting stuck with 2 channel sound is a bit irritating.

You might want to try the fix I posted here:

How often are you guys using Spacebar during battle? I'm finding using Spacebar almost turns this game into a turn based FPS of sorts.

What does spacebar do? Do it bring up the inventory and pause like LB and RB in the 360? IF so then, yes I imagine it does. ::

It's definitely a slower paced shooter. On hard and above there is no room for **** ups. Or **** downs for that matter.

I did find the 5.1 sound work around by simply commenting the line "NoHALSupport4=SB Audigy" so it reads "//NoHalSupport4=SB Audigy". Got that in a post in the Mass Effect forum from someone who had an Audigy 2, it was posted as a fix in Vista but also worked for me in XP. Got my 5.1 sound now even though the Log still says Audigy 2 not supported. Strange deal on that whole thing.

My god, the first 20 or more minutes of this game and I was ready to chew my fingers off and pour salt in my eyes of sheer long assed drawn out dialogue boredom. But after collecting my squad, having SOME freedom and cruising around the galaxy, and of course getting pretty caught up in the story, I am flippin glued to this game.

From a visual standpoint, this is the sexiest game I've played to date. And considering it doesnt have super uber textures everywhere at all times, they did everything really well, nice job.

anyone else think that this might be one of the weakest bioware games?

compared to NWN, BG, Kotor, this could have been better

It's only worse than NWN if you consider all the mods NWN got. If you're just talking the vanilla NWN and expansions, then Mass Effect is better.

Jade Empire was way worse. KOTOR was better than Mass Effect, I'll agree.

It's hard to compare it to BG or BG2, really different games. For what it's worth I could never get into any of the games on that engine, but I wasn't madly in love with Mass Effect either.

Not in the slightest, it's their strongest game yet by a wide margin, if only for the reason that it is based on their own universe as opposed to Forgotten Realms or Star Wars. The story is their best yet and the gameplay is well-designed and a very strong mix of action and RPG elements.

The problem, I think, is that the game is shorter than their previous titles, and you have less character interaction and depth because of it. That said, the narrative is tighter and better paced than their previous games (especially NWN).

My only real complaint is the squad combat system - your squad mates should be smarter and actively seek out cover and good fields of fire, instead of staying glued to you, in absence of player direction. I'm playing the combat sections more as a third person shooter than as a squad based shooter. The squad management just slows the fights down too much.

for me personally, this is one of their weaker games, i don't know why. Visuals are great, story is great, but it somehow feels like there is something missing.

I had more fun playing Jade Empire, which wasn't the best Bioware game.

Have you messed with the squad AI options much? I haven't really so I wouldn't know, but I seem to remember on the Xbox version that they would actively seek cover and use their abilities intelligently...I've set them on manual so far.
