Landing on planets and exploring them reminds me a lot of Star Control 2 where you can "scan" some planets and land on others to pick up resources. It was extremely cheesy looking back in the early 90s but I think this part of Mass Effect was inspired by that game.

So far the only thing I don't like about this game is the combat.

Its clunky and at this point it doesn't feel like my character's combat abilities are really progressing. Its so "loose" feeling that even after raising my stats considerably and buying more powerful weapons, I'm not really noticing any difference. I'm playing on Veteran, so it can be pretty tough and my squad mates almost always die because they are apparently retarded... but it just feels like a mediocre third person shooter.

I'm glad the rest of the game is absolutely fantastic and that there is a good balance of combat, exploration and dialog.
It took me a while to "get" the combat, I also felt it to be very clumsy and kept dying/getting my party killed. Once I got into the flow of it however, it quickly became my favorite part of the game! It's really crucial to use each team member's skills at the correct time, and maintain complete control over them because as you said, they really aren't too bright on their own.

For example, right now I'm playing through on the first unlocked difficulty as an Engineer. The normal plan of attack is sending Ashley forward to draw fire (i equip her with a shotgun), have Ash activate her endurance skill to reduce damage by 50%, then have Liara use her biotic skills (like lift) to throw everyone around, I'll use Overload to disable everyone's shields, then just pick off what's left! Also throwing in skills like Sabatoge to minimize the fire Ash takes, or my favorite; use AI hacking to turn a geth armature to our side!

Very fun and I rarely have anyone on my team die; just make sure Liara (and myself, since I'm rather delicate) stays back, have Ash tank and activate her skills at the right time, throw anyone who comes close to Liara and myself, toss a few nades here and there, and you'll be running over the enemy like crazy.

I'm forcing it through control panel, needs supersampling enabled apparently (177.26).

I tried what you said with making use of each characters abilities, but I'm running into a major problem.

They don't freaking do what I tell them.

If I tell wrex to go to a wall, he will run half way there and then go to a different area. Or if I tell someone to use their abilities, they won't do it unless they are in clear sight of their target (ie, if they are hiding behind a wall they won't look out and attack) and some times they don't even acknowledge my orders. I told wrex to use carnage on someone and he didn't do anything. 10 seconds later I gave him a move order and he used carnage on the wall in front of him and then went to where I told him to go. Its like the order was stuck or something.

Also, the enemy AI doesn't make any sense to me at all. I try to use strategy, but most of the time they just run strait at my squad, run around us in circles while firing (point blank) and then run away. The cover system is completely worthless when the enemies just run around behind you anyway. I keep getting stuck on walls and my team won't follow orders.

So far its worked much better to just let my team follow me around while I run around and randomly shoot at people. If they die, it doesn't really make any difference.

I'm trying to use Wrex and Garrus.

The rest of the game kicks so much ass, I can't believe that the combat is this bad...

EDIT: For what its worth, I loved the combat system in KOTOR. This isn't even close to the same thing. This plays more like that Shadowrun game from last year. It feels loose, clumsy and the weapons are inaccurate with lots of brightly colored stuff flying around.

Got a simmilar error when on planet Nepmos/Erebus system/Styx Theta cluster. Trying to clear a Rachni nest (somewhere in the middle of the map) made the game crash.

never happened over here, this entire game is a mess. they should call it mess effect. BioWare lost it's touch. Kind of worried for Dragon Age, what if Bioware screws that one up aswell

Game was good on 360, but it had tighter controls and a more cinematic feel. Dragon Age should be ok as it is PC from ground up... I think.

There are just some games that go better on console. Mass Effect is one of them. ::

While other games are just better on PC, like Quake 4.
