Increase Electronics, if you don't have that skill you'll need someone in your squad with that skill and invest some points into it.

I split my tech skills with Garrus. Maxed out Electronics on Sheppard and maxed out Decryption on Garrus pretty early on. Kept him around for most of the second half of the game and had plenty of extra points to raise combat skills for both of them.

No probe or crate went un-hacked in my game.

Yeah if you're a soldier you'll have to rely on your squad mates for decrypting\unlocking things and doing any really crazy special attacks. That isn't really a bad thing though. You'll be able to wipe the floor with your enemies.

I see. yeah i chose a soldier just to enjoy the firepower of the weapons. i'll go more biotech/technical in my second run.
so far the action is quite good

the gameplay style of Mass Effect suits me more than KOTOR's

I went bio the first time i played it. Second time around I went with a soldier. I think I'll play as a chick third time thru.
