Is this specific to 173.14.05, Linux 2.6.26-rc4, both or neither? Does the problem persist after a reboot?

I just upgraded my Debian box to kernel 2.6.24 and have the same problem.

NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 173.14.05 Mon May 19 00:06:12 PDT 2008
NVRM: failed to copy vbios to system memory.
NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x30:0xffffffff:892)
NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed

And yes, it persists after rebooting

@BeLioN: what driver release did you upgrade from? Is the problem specific to Linux 2.6.24 or 173.14.05? Please attach an nvidia-bug-report.log file (see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678).

Haven't tried any other kernels, although 173.08 worked with 2.6.26-rc4 (with patch for 173.08)

Problem persists after reboot.

I am having the same problem on my laptop.

Hardware: Dell D820 with G72M [GeForce Go 7400]
OS: Fedora F9 x86 with kernel 2.6.25.3

173.08 works. 173.14.05 fails.

Same problem here... well... not exactly: I use a stock 2.6.24.2 kernel provided in Zenwalk 5.0...

There's an aditional message not logged in the attached bugfile:

"NVIDIA: Could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (Input/output error)."

Hardware: Toshiba Satellite M-30 - SP309 (Card is an Geforce Go FX5200 with 32 MB VRAM)

173.08 works. But 173.14.05 don't.

Best regards.

J.

Same problem here, same laptop: Dell D820

Driver was installed from the livna repo via yum install kmod-nvidia

173.08 works with the --IgnoreABI option...

173.14.05 fails with
NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed
NVRM: failed to copy vbios to system memory

Exactly my setup, same laptop, same software install. Same problem. I have reverted to the open source nv driver for now. In the meantime, I want rollback to the prior version so I can get my second monitor working again. Does anyone have (or know where to find) the prior version RPMs from livna? I did a quick check on the livna site and they seem to keep only the most recent RPM posted.
